Gov. Bob McDonnell and members of the Virginia congressional delegation will have a long-sought meeting next week with Secretary of Defense Robert Gates to make their plea for keeping open the Hampton Roads-based Joint Forces Command, which is proposed for closure.
The meeting at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday at the Pentagon will include Terrie Suit, assistant to the governor for commonwealth preparedness; and former Rep. Tom Davis, who chairs the Virginia Commission on Military and National Security Facilities, said Tucker Martin, the governor's spokesman.
The Joint Forces Command focuses on better coordinating the response of the branches of the armed services and employs about 6,000 in the region. Virginia officials have previously met with Pentagon staff members about their objections to the closure.
