Add another to Virginia's long list of 2012 U.S. Senate candidates, this one a Democrat.
Courtney Lynch, a Marine Corps veteran and founding partner of Lead Star consulting firm, announced Wednesday that she will seek the seat being vacated by Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va.
That means Lynch, a Fairfax City mother of three, will take on former Gov. Timothy M. Kaine, who has already raised $2.25 million, for the Democratic nomination.
"Citizens of our great state and nation are frustrated with the direction the country is heading in. More of the same is not an option for voters," Lynch said in a statement.
"Being a political insider is not high on the list of requirements to serve this nation. In fact, fresh faces with valuable ideas are in demand."
Lynch, co-author of "Leading from the Front: No Excuse Leadership Tactics for Women," said she plans to run a campaign focused on job creation, fiscal opportunity and responsibility and global leadership.
On her website, Lynch has released an "action plan" laying out the tenets of her campaign.
"It's time for true leadership, not petty partisan politics," Lynch said. "Right now most media attention regarding the 2012 Senate race is focused on the frenzy of two political heavyweights slugging it out in the battleground state of Virginia.
"The race is ripe for a Democratic challenger with proven leadership experience to earn the respect of voters who want a new direction and a new kind of leader."
Lynch's entrance brings the total number of candidates to nine, with Kaine and fellow former governor George Allen, a Republican, the frontrunners. Julien Modica, of Reston, is the only other Democratic candidate.
