Abbas proposed as Palestinian premier
Hamas on Sunday endorsed a proposal by Qatar that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas assume the role of prime minister in an interim Palestinian unity government that would prepare for general elections in the West Bank and Gaza, according to two officials close to the contacts.
Such an arrangement, proposed by Qatar's emir, would help Abbas and his main political rival, the Islamic militant group Hamas, clear a major hurdle in slow-moving attempts to reconcile.
Yemeni leader seen leaving N.Y. hotel
A protest against embattled Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh outside a luxury hotel got heated Sunday when demonstrators saw him leave the building, with one charging toward him and another throwing a shoe.
"Everybody is living in fear of this guy at home, but here, he's getting good treatment!" said Yemeni immigrant Nasser Almroot, a Brooklyn grocer. Saleh, 69, is visiting the United States for medical treatment.
Norovirus strikes 3rd cruise ship
A stomach virus has stricken people on a third U.S. cruise ship, with a vessel sailing from New Orleans delayed by norovirus.
Port of New Orleans spokesman Chris Bonura said Sunday that Royal Caribbean's "Voyager of the Sea" left a couple of hours late on Saturday because of the illnesses.
About 200 passengers became ill. Norovirus is easily spread in close quarters such as cruise ships and nursing homes.
Noriega hospitalized with hypertension
Former Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega, who was toppled by a 1989 American invasion and later convicted of drug running, was transferred from prison to a hospital on Sunday because of extreme hypertension, health officials said.
Health Minister Franklin Vergara said Noriega's blood pressure was very high, nearly leading to a stroke.
