STEVE KIMBALL Metro Business talked to Steve Kimball, managing director of Tuscan Advisors, a Henrico County-based business consulting firm. He also is a member of the Richmond Venture Forum, a group that brings together venture capitalists and entrepreneurs. He was asked about the status of entrepreneurs:

"Entrepreneurs are America's competitive advantage. In the last 20 years, they created 80 percent of the jobs. They are the real job creators.

"Times like these -- downturns -- is when half of the Fortune 500 [companies] were founded or really figured out their business models.

"A couple key things that entrepreneurs are doing right now: They are adjusting those models to the real market realities to make sure they are meeting a real need. They are becoming more competitive. They are becoming leaner.

"And, as a result, they are actually creating new jobs . . .

"For all the entrepreneurs out there, this a is a great time -- it is a carpe diem."
