VCU Chipotle will open in late spring

Chipotle will open a restaurant near the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University in the late spring.

The eatery, which features specialty burritos, will be in the spot previously occupied by Pizza Hut at West Grace and North Laurel streets.

Chipotle already has seven restaurants in the Richmond area.

Katherine Newell Smith, a spokeswoman for the chain, said the new restaurant will include some green building features Chipotle has been using as it expands.

The galvanized steel inside the chain’s restaurants is largely recycled, between 60 percent and 90 percent, and the drywall is 100 percent recycled.

The chain also uses naturally raised pork, beef and poultry.

Shockoe come-ons

About a dozen Shockoe Slip retailers are coming together to get customers out and buying in their shops.

For every $100 spent at the retailers in this month and next, shoppers will get two free River District Canal Cruise tickets and two $5-off lunch vouchers at participating restaurants.

For every $200 a household spends, the prize is two free Segway of Richmond tour tickets and two lunch vouchers.

Shockoe Slip is in downtown Richmond on East Cary Street, between 12th and 14th streets.

I’m still amazed at how ignorant Richmonders are about downtown. I’ve been downtown/bottom probably a thousand times, night and day, with zero instances. I live in the burbs and still go down there all the time. I might serve you well if you actually step beyond the electric fence you probably have around your house once in a while.
