What’s It Worth?

Q:I own an antique peanut roaster that once belonged to my grandfather. It is a cart on wheels with a brass tag that reads "The Bartholomew Co., Peoria, ILL." It appears to be in good condition. What is its history and value? -- M.K.

Answer: Commercial peanut roasters and popcorn machines on wheels were used by street vendors in America beginning around the turn of the 20th century. Early carts such as this one often were kerosene-fired. Most of the machines sold for a few dollars.

J.B. Bartholomew began his small company as a side business while working for another firm. Around 1902, while producing peanut and popcorn vendor carts, he manufactured automobiles and made the Glide. The company folded in 1920.

This machine in unrestored condition would retail for about $1,250.

Q:I inherited several pieces of antique furniture, including a sofa. It has a carved wood frame. How old is it and what is it worth? -- P.L.

Answer: It is American manufactured furniture dating from around 1910. It is a transitional piece with some Eastlake details. It probably was part of a parlor suite.

I hate to say this, but early-20th-century furniture like this is really ugly. However, just wait a lifetime, and it may become popular again. It would retail for about $100.
