An artillery shell found in Petersburg on the perimeter of a landfill earlier this afternoon turned out to be a non-explosive training round that did not need to be detonated.

The shell was found behind Top Side Tent Rental at 1605 E. Washington St. by a surveyor and reported to the fire department about 12:30 p.m., said Capt. Jeff Ivey of the Petersburg Fire Department.

The Virginia State Police bomb squad was called but it was determined the shell was non-explosive and it was taken away, said Ivey.
