Police seek suspects in string of bank robberies

Richmond police are trying to locate suspects in five bank robberies that took place in the past several weeks.

The most recent occurred Monday when a man entered the SunTrust branch at 3022 W. Broad St. at 3:44 p.m. and handed a teller a note demanding money.

The suspect, who did not show a weapon, left the bank, heading west on West Broad Street. He is described as being between 35 to 40 years of age, 6 feet tall and about 200 pounds, with a dark complexion and a rough beard. He wore sunglasses, a green hooded sweatshirt beneath a dark jacket and a baseball cap.

The same bank branch was robbed two weeks earlier on Dec. 22 at 12:40 p.m. by a woman who handed a teller a note demanding money but did not display a weapon. That suspect was described as being 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing between 165 to 175 pounds and in her mid-30s. She wore a dark coat, blue jeans that were faded in the front, black gloves and black sunglasses.

Also on Dec. 22, the Connects Federal Credit Union at 7155 Jahnke Road was robbed about 7:45 a.m. by a man who handed a teller a note demanding money. The suspect did not display a weapon and was described as standing about 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing about 240 pounds and wearing sunglasses, a dark brown or dark green hooded sweatshirt, black sweatpants and black sneakers.

Two other banks were robbed on Dec. 19. The first robbery occurred at the Wachovia Bank at 3508 W. Cary St. at 9:26 a.m. after an unarmed man handed a teller a note. The suspect is described as being 6 feet 5 inches tall with a mustache and wearing a dark jacket with a hooded sweatshirt, a dark baseball cap and gold glasses.

The second bank robbery that day took place at the SunTrust bank at 919 E. Main St. at 5:25 p.m. by a man who handed a teller a note but did not display a weapon. That suspect is described as being 6 feet 2 inches tall with a heavy build, a bald head and a mustache. He wore glasses, a black jacket and blue jeans.

Anyone with information about these robberies is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
