Salvation Army: Thanks for help preparing for Dec. 25
The Salvation Army Christmas Center, a place where generous donors help make Christmas dreams come true, celebrated its grand opening yesterday.
"We're all about having something to look forward to on Christmas morning," said Maj. Dan Proctor, the Salvation Army's Richmond-area commander.
"We have so many people to thank and recognize."
Charlotte M. Minor, the 2008 Richmond Christmas Mother, was among the guests acknowledged for helping to provide gifts for 7,000 families this year, including 17,000 children and 750 seniors.
Last year, the community gave more than $325,000 to help 6,500 families, including 15,000 children.
"I heard from other Christmas Mothers how large and organized everything is," Minor said during brief remarks.
"The Times-Dispatch is very pleased to partner with the Salvation Army. It's a wonderful thing we do for our community," she said.
The Richmond Christmas Mother Fund has provided needy children and families with toys, clothing, food and other assistance during the holidays since 1935. It was established that year by John Stewart Bryan, publisher of The Richmond News Leader, the city's afternoon newspaper.
In 1940, the Bryan family bought the Richmond Times-Dispatch, and the two newspapers ultimately merged in 1992.
The Salvation Army now administers the fund as part of its citywide Christmas programs.
This year the center is operating out of a 65,000-square-foot warehouse at 1101 E. Laburnum Ave. About 110,000 square feet is ideal, organizers said. Because the parking lot is smaller, some volunteers ride a bus from the nearby Richmond International Raceway.
The center provides families with items such as coats, mesh stockings stuffed with goodies, new toys and when possible "something extra to add a festive touch to Christmas," said Maj. Francina Proctor.
Minor praised the hard-working volunteers and staff, the setup and the Salvation Army's leadership for brightening the lives of so many.
The 74th person to hold the title of Christmas Mother, Minor said she's been touched by the generosity of others.
"It's been very heartening and inspiring to meet so many different people willing to help."
