A man has died after being shot by Chesterfield County police in a standoff last night in Midlothian.

Police said Brett M. Rivers, 36, of the 500 block of Kerri Cove Court died shortly before 2:30 this morning at VCU Medical Center.

Police said they opened fire on Rivers at his apartment complex after he opened fire on members of the department's SWAT team.

Capt. Dave Stone said the incident began shortly after 6 p.m. when police received a disturbance call that a resident of the Park at Salisbury Apartments was brandishing a gun at an employee.

Rivers later retreated into his apartment, where two to three shots were fired inside, police said.

Officers evacuated nearby residents, called for the department's SWAT team and began to negotiate with Rivers.

Police said that after 2½ hours of negotiations, Rivers left his apartment and fired several shots at the SWAT team. They responded and shot the suspect.

Police would not specify how many times Rivers was struck.

Police said a SWAT team officer was placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of an investigation of the shooting.

The apartment is off North Otterdale Road near Midlothian Turnpike east of state Route 288.
