UPDATE: Robbery targets two on Monument Avenue

» 9 Comments | Post a Comment

A robber with a gun and another with a Taser robbed two people at a Monument Avenue apartment building and tried to break into another apartment this evening, police said.

The two armed men approached a man and woman about 6:25 p.m. at an apartment building at 3411 Monument Ave., said Richmond police Capt. Scott Booth.

The robbers tried to tie up the man but they stopped when he resisted, Booth said. They made off with a purse, cash and credit cards.

One or both robbers also kicked the door of another unit in the same apartment building, but the door didn't open. Witnesses saw the robbers leaving in a blue van, Booth said. Authorities found the van in South Richmond and arrested one suspect, later identified as John Johnson, 35.

Police say they have strong leads on Johnson's alleged accomplice.

No one was injured.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000.

Biff-what a stupid comment! Crime happens everywhere, there are no boundaries. And Monument Ave is not a “bad” part of town, some of the most beautiful homes in Richmond are in this area. But that is not relavent to this discussion. The point is that crime happens, in all neighborhoods, and if you think the far West End is superior, you need to get your head out of your a**, and get real!

for all of those ‘city haters’, you need to be aware that these types of crime take place everywhere and will probably be far more commonplace in your neighborhood(short pump, deer run, etc) soon enough. i am thankful(as we all should be)that the police department caught one of the suspects and will probably have the other one in custody soon, but i think that a lot of people have missed the underlying message here…neighbors/witnesses saw what happened and informed police…that is what needs to occur more, instead of turning a blind eye to crime, when you see it, report it, especially if it is in your neighborhood.  that is one of the quickest ways of making sure it decreases in your area.

Biff:  I can see from your post that you are not comfortable writing using words of more than one syllable.  I think it would be best for you to stay in the far west end and not come into the city as we would not want you wandering downtown staring up at the buildings.  You might trip over fire hydrants or walk into street signs.  And I’m sure that the street crossing signs would just confuse you.  So Biff, as I say to my dog, “Stay boy, Stay.“

too funny!  when I saw this article this morning, I wondered how long it would take before some west-ender mentioned how scary the city is.  Sure enough, the first comment (from Biff) was antagonistic towards city-dwellers.  Well Biff (fitting name for a west end resident, no?) I think I speak for just about everyone who lives in the city when I say: ‘Richmond is terribly frightening and you suburbanites should definitely stay away!  Enjoy your chain restaurants, generic shopping, and absence of museums/culture/fraternity/etc.  And please, at your first opportunity, move even further away.‘

Keep in mind, police departments RELEASE the information for public consumption when crimes occur. Some are better at keeping journalist at bay.

Yet, this neighborhood has an increase in crime in the past couple months. Remember, trust no one, and protect yourself to the level of self-defense unto which you’re comfortable.

Biff…are you really serious?  Have you not been paying attention to the news in recent months??  Dumb comment!!

Sure, the West End is great, if you’re talking about the West End of Richmond.  Including such areas as Westmoreland Place, Libbie/Grove, Windsor Farms, what have you.

Those are the places that gave the West End its good name.

If, however, you’re talking about the far reaches of Western Henrico, which housing developers and real-estate agents *pretend* is the West End, so they can unload more and more plasticky trash sprawl on everyone, that’s a different matter.  The neighborhoods are a nightmare of anomie and what passes for ‘architecture’ is better suited to a trailer park.

So I hope you’re talking about the real thing.  However you attitude makes me skeptical—people in the real West End are more enlightened.

Biff Tannen,
That comment is the reason why some of you think the way you do. Just becuase you choose not to live in the west end doesnt mean ur immune from crime..trust me. most of the criminals venture into the city from your ‘Best End’.  Take a look and the ones that are bombing, shooting up innocents..that’t not the city ppl…those are your ‘Best Endies’.

-and in case ur wondering, i love in the west end too…

And people wonder why us civilized folk refuse to go near(much less live in!) the city.  I’d rather be around the right crowd here in the West End where we have better shopping, much nicer homes, and less crime.  The West End is the Best End!
