Richmond’s Pearl

The Times-Dispatch's Public Square forums recognize Ruby Turner. She usually sits near the front and takes notes. Her visible concentration reflects her interest in the topic under discussion, as well as her commitment to her community. Turner's countenance conveys her faith. She contributes to the conversation, often with statements that supply scriptural context.

Turner is one of those gentle souls whose presence enriches not only the individuals passing her way but society as a whole. Her being suggests an evangelism proclaimed not from lofty pulpits or circulated via space-age technology but an evangelism simply lived.

It was not surprising, therefore, to read Jeremy Slayton's news story yesterday about her determination to combat violence. Turner's Citizens of Greater Richmond Against Gun Violence recently celebrated its sixth anniversary. Dozens of local law enforcement officials praised the group. Turner and her colleagues are not vigilantes on foot patrol; rather, they seek to heal the sin-sick soul, to light for others the better way. Their devotions complement the good work of Metro Richmond at Prayer.

Turner also is a Renaissance woman. We have shared her company not only at our Public Squares but during book sessions at the Library of Virginia. She keeps up with the international scene through the World Affairs Council of Greater Richmond. Central Virginia owes gratitude for this pearl.
