CORRESPONDENT OF THE DAY
As Yet Still Unanswered: Why Are the Media Liberal?
-- Editor, Times-Dispatch:
I tweaked, and now have been tweaked, by five other letter-writers, including Pat O'Bannon, whom I know and think is a good public servant, despite her party affiliation. Guess my letter hit a sore spot.Unfortunately, none of these good people attempted to answer the question I asked: If we assume the news media are biased toward liberals, why is that the case? Instead, each of my critics apparently did not like my possible explanation that people in the news media read real books.
To Chris Lucas, who questioned my scientific methodology: I will go to the main Chesterfield library and prowl the parking lot, taking due notice of any NRA bumper stickers, as I test my methodology in that venue.
To Tom McGrath: I commit to contacting my favorite bookstore to request removal of those comfy chairs that evidently attract only effete liberals who read the books but do not buy them.
To Mary Seay: I appreciate your forgoing bookstores on Sundays, because I shall be able to park closer to the store and not have to read as many liberal bumper stickers.
To Bruce Chisholm, while he may not advertise his conservative beliefs on his car, all of us have seen numerous Bush-Cheney, McCain-Palin, anti-gay, and other conservative bumper stickers. So, conservatives do advertise, but perhaps not in bookstore parking lots, if my one-time survey was valid.
And to O'Bannon -- well, I guess she is right about conservatives donating more money. After all, the Republican administration currently in power has provided the leadership to donate billions of dollars to our needy banks and automobile manufacturers, and this after eight years of driving our country to the brink of bankruptcy.
