Our Founding Fathers Had Strong Beliefs
Editor, Times-Dispatch:
It seems to me as if Fea Wintersteen ["U.S. Was Founded for Believers and Atheists"] is another product of public schools and universities and the constant indoctrination of liberal views upon our children. I am so tired of hearing the argument that our Founding Fathers were not God-fearing men.I challenge critics to research Benjamin Franklin's comments at the Constitutional Convention where he says, "I have lived, Sir, a long time and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth -- that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an entire empire can rise without His aid?" Franklin goes on to urge the convention to adjourn for prayer and to pray before each meeting, thus establishing a precedent that is still followed in Congress today.
Let's not forget George Washington's words, "It is impossible to govern the world without God and the Bible." The First Amendment's intention was to protect religion from government, not government from religion. And while I'm at it, nowhere in the Constitution is "separation of church and state" even mentioned.
True, this is a country where one has the freedom to either have faith in a higher power or not. I just have to wonder and fear how much longer it will stay that way.

Organized Labor Has Helped Everyone
Editor, Times-Dispatch:
George Mitchell's letter, "Level the Playing Field for the Big Three," makes quite a grandiose statement -- that "organized labor has driven out and stymied a lot of expansion in the U.S." Without supporting his statement, the overreaching generalization excludes the fact that capitalists and entrepreneurs are consistently seeking out cheaper labor sources. Because of what Karl Marx referred to as the "industrial reserve army," they can find them, whether it be in the southern U.S. or the global South.Taft-Hartley was the first in a series of sweeping and crushing attacks targeting worker solidarity, creating right-to-work states. The presidency of Ronald Reagan followed as he manipulated and mobilized the interests' free-market capital via the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization's strike. Financiers were also integral to the refinancing of New York City, crushing public employees' unions, leading to the upper-middle-class refuge that is now Manhattan.
We must remember that unions operate on a very basic tenet of American mythology: democracy. National Labor Relations Board elections are decided upon by the majority of the workplace. If all of these previous statements have not rung true in Mitchell's mind, I must ask him: Does he have weekends off? Things we consider common sense in the workplace now, such as weekends and the end of child labor, came because workers exercised their collective strength. If he so hates monopolies, then maybe he should first look to the dissolution and abolition of business owners' solidarities -- the IMF, World Bank, G-8, and locally, chambers of commerce.

Maybe Conservatives Just Preach Less
Editor, Times-Dispatch:
Correspondent Robert Adams ["Maybe Liberals Are Simply Less Ignorant"] has observed that liberal bumper stickers in a bookstore parking lot give possible evidence that liberals read more books. This evidence is purely circumstantial. It may be that the conservatives in the store at the time of Adams' visit had not found it necessary to post bumper stickers. I am a conservative; I don't have a bumper sticker on my car. Yet I have been known to haunt the aisles of bookstores.
Maybe the bookstore had removed all books of conservative ideology, so there was no need for conservatives to congregate. After all, a conservative would be interested only in conservative books, right? Yet, I'm positive that there are books on many subjects conservatives find interesting. I would bet my NRA membership on it.
Sticker sleuthing would not be complete without investigating public library lots as well. Maybe the bumper sticker count would even out, what with all of the soccer moms whisking their conservative kids to the library to check out, and return . . . why, yes -- books!
Also, we had a recent election in which the "conservative" candidate was soundly defeated. Given the local outcome, it may be expected that any parking lot in town would sport more liberal bumper stickers than conservative.
All this aside, the idea that liberals read more books was put forward, I believe, in explanation of the widely held belief that a liberal news media bias does exist. This was not refuted by Adams. But his attempt to explain a national news community bias, by counting bumper stickers in a local bookstore parking lot, seems a stretch in logic. I would just call it a conservative guess.

Reader Reactions
That’s really funny, you guys want to put Caroline Kennedy in Hillary Clinton’s senate seat and you think that Sarah Palin and George W. Bush are dumb. You won’t even hold your own party accountable for it’s malfeasance and nonfeasance - you calling anything or anyone dumb or disgusting is yet another punch line in the joke known as the democrat party. Thank you for parroting more talking points, we’ll look forward to more.
Think about this for a minute, you guys offered us Al Gore and John Kerry as presidential candidates and they weren’t smart enough to beat Bush on either occasion. When YOUR candidates are too dumb to beat someone you classify as a moron, you’re really playing a losing hand. Maybe you should try another angle - if your critical thinking skills allow you.
Good luck with that - let us know how it turns out.
If you represent the Obama faction of narrow minded vindictive liberals I think I just might continue to be friendly with the trailer crowd. It’s been proved that liberals have a form of mental illness. You fit that diagnosis. At least I don’t worry about my friends being eat up with hate and distain for everybody not like me.
The people who voted for Bush twice (dumb) and think Sarah Palin is just wonderful (dumber) check in again. Losers! Fortunately, you are a part of a shrinking minority, albeit an increasingly disgusting one.
People who live in trailers (1.) have a home and (2.) pay their bills on time. Which is more than I can say for a lot of Obama supporters here in town. Happy New Years everyone!
It’s about time the rest of YOUR world moved on, you’ve been squealing and crying about the 2000 election for 8 years. We’re glad you’re finally going to shut up about it.
You need to get your bigoted stereotypes straight if you’re going to engage in a dialogue here. On one hand, you’re asserting that we Republicans all drive pick up trucks and live in trailers; but, on the other hand, we’re nothing but a bunch of rich Repulicans - get your talking point straight Mr. Parrot.
Speaking of which, what’s you’re problem with people who drive pick up trucks and live in trailers? They’re the people your party claims to embrace and support - or is it that you NEED their votes but can’t stand their company (it’s the same way your party treats the black community)? I always knew you guys hated working class people - your comment simply showed everyone else.
Maybe you need to take a time out, catch your ever-hyperventilating breath and think. You’re party is pushing the global warming hoax, you’ve given us Governor Blagojevich, William Jefferson, Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi - not exactly the attendance roster of a Mensa meeting or a well respected speakers’ line up at an ethics symposium. Government fiddling contributed to the economy that we’re contending with and your party’s solution is…..more government. Doing the same thing over and expecting a different result, eh?
Keep talking though, the more you do, the more everyone can see that you have even less substance than the guy you supported for president.
According to all the latest news reports the UAW has certainly helped themselves to some hefty portions of union funds.
They purchased a now defunct airline. A luxury convention center. A golf course and club. Several of which ventures have also proved bad investments.
They seemingly not only made shady deals they made stupid deals.
I realize that this is only one union but they are the most high profile at the moment and it certainly does not inspire public confidence in unions as a whole.
The official word which I researched when I read the original letter is that Liberals read an average of 9 books a year and Conservatives read 8.
The difference being that liberals read fiction and conservatives read non-fiction more frequently.
That should be no surprise to anyone.
Bumber stickers with their sound bite catch phrase brevity would appeal to those with very short attention spans.
They are also easily changed with each passing trend.
So it looks like the Bush/Chaney crowd are doing WW11 and the Obama/Biden bunch are doing fiction like Dreams From My Father.Which should be found right next to the section with the books with lots of pictures.
Oh, my. What a bunch of losers. I’m sure you’ve still proudly got your McCain-Palin bumper stickers on your pick-ups parked in front of your trailers, but the rest of the world moved on. Can’t stand it, eh?
Literate Republicans is almost an oxymoron
Well what they have to say makes a whole lot more sense than the highly educated “literate” socialist leaning liberals.
That’s why the country is in such sad shape. Liberals are too busy trying to gain an advantage over anyone who doesn’t agree with them or fit their vision of how everyone else should behave and believe.
Don’t you love closed minded liberals chastising everyone they disagree with of being closed minded? Do tell, are you simply a hypocrite or just shameless about accusing others of the things you’re guilty of? Oh, wait, maybe you’re a Saul Alinsky disciple practicing his “rules for radicals”. In any of the three cases, it’s pretty transparent.
You gotta love responses that refer to President Bush, Fox News and Rush Limbaugh in a deragatory light as if the liberal’s world view isn’t molded by Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann, Rosie O’Donnell, CBS, MSNBC, NBC, ABC, Air America and NPR - none of whom call it straight down the line. Nice try - but, sorry, you lose.
You have to feel sorry for people who can’t make distinctions between literacy and being inarticulate at public speaking. Yes, President Bush was a horrible impromptu speaker - but, what do you get when you take away a teleprompter from Barack Obama? You get ummmmmm, ummmmm, ummmmm and intense, incomprehensible droning from the president elect. Without a teleprompter, the president elect is excruciatingly painful to listen to.
With regards to your last statement that starts, “So, if by see a Bush/Cheney bumper sticker…..“ Maybe YOU need to get over to Barnes & Noble, pass the comic book section and pick up a book on grammar or “Elements of Style” which is used in most writing courses at the college level.
Good luck with that.
