Kudos to City On Restored Lake
Editor, Times-Dispatch: In a time when municipal governments find it difficult to fund special projects, I write to offer my thanks and congratulations to the Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities for the wonderful surprise I received this morning as I took my daily walk.

I did not have high hopes last May when Forest Hill Park was closed to walking traffic so workmen could dredge the sediment that has suffocated the historic lake. I doubted the city's ability to restore the aquatic life and once-beautiful trails. But at last, the hurricane fences and barriers were down and my first sight of the restoration was breathtaking. Even though not completely finished, the stream-fed lake is once again beautiful and this jewel of a park, which belongs to all of us, is returned to its former glory. Louise Perry. Richmond

Peace Didn't Inspire; Bad Behavior Did
Editor, Times-Dispatch: The Nobel Prizes grew out of the desire to recognize people who have made serious, long-term commitments to medicine, literature, and the sciences, as well as peace. These people have enriched our lives, and almost all of them were previously unknown to us, popping into our consciousness after working for decades pursuing their passion, and finally achieving real results.

Sadly, awarding the Nobel Prize to President Barack Obama says nothing about real efforts or true dedication. He was nominated before the first month of his presidency had expired and before he had left the White House to visit any foreign leader. In the nine months since then he has appeared at the U.N. and various foreign conferences, making speeches extolling international cooperation. But no war has ended because of him and no long-term foes are reconciling, or even negotiating, because of him. At this stage of his career he's good on the podium and is something of an international rock star. That's it.

So let's be honest. This year's Nobel Peace Prize is not about peace, it's about hate. The Norwegian committee that selected Obama did it because the members, like others in the world, hated the presidency of George W. Bush. Rather than recognize true accomplishment by Obama, they decided to punish what they perceived to be bad behavior by Bush. In so doing they cheapened the Nobel Prize and saddened those who hoped to celebrate a person of great deeds, not lofty words. That person is still out there, working hard without recognition, and not at all concerned about the politics of the Nobel Prize.

Nobel Award Makes Old Timer Appreciative
Editor, Times-Dispatch: As old as I am, I have never won much of anything. Certainly nothing to be extremely proud of. Really, the only thing that I can remember winning was a lawn chair at "Two Guys." It was one of those occurrences that seemed neat at the time, but was quickly relegated to the inconsequential bin.

Today, with the recognition that Presidents Jimmy Carter and Barack Hussein Obama are now winners of the highly acclaimed Nobel Peace Prize, the self-esteem associated with my winning of that lawn chair soared to new and unexpected levels.

It's great to have something to thank these two noble statesmen for.

NAACP Proves Its Irrelevance
Editor, Times-Dispatch: I cannot believe what I have been hearing from the local NAACP.

Is the ability to find something relevant to address so far gone that the only thing popping up on its radar is the name "Hambone"? Most people would find that a positive and agreeable name, and probably never heard the meaning spouted by the local NAACP chapter.

This should show that the NAACP, in whole, is becoming an unnecessary body that should be replaced by something more positive for black America.

Simply looking for something to complain about, such as the name "Hambone," is so far afield that I can hardly believe it.

No more proof of the irrelevance of the current NAACP body is necessary.

I thought it might have been you Randy. I will be glad to put this to rest now.
You are so right it is always best to ignore the personal jibes.
Even though sometimes it is almost irrestible to do so.
There should be no place or reason,  in this forum for strangers sniping at each other.
Whack away at the opinion to your hearts content but leave the personal at the door.
I too was appalled at the attack on 12step. A very worthy opponent.

In the future I intend to ignore the “gas” erupting like an eternal flame from you know who.

Greta - that would have been me. I always let comments directed at me slide off my back, but, when you were attacked like that, enough was enough. I don’t like it when my esteemed foil 12step got blindsided by two goofs using what might have been his real name and I was incredulous at the extremely personal nature of the attack by you-know-who. I’ve seen some pretty brutal stuff directed at folks (I’ve done it too), but nothing along the lines at what was directed at you by you-know-who.

The kind comments came to my e-mail as did the last comments by our incoherent
poster.

Oh where could thee good comments from gentleman did go?  They seem to have gone with the wind, as would a passing of gas.

Try to remember, this time near after September, yet before November, when such kind words of defense for a “woman” was uttered.  A “woman”?  What, she not deserve reference as a “lady”?  Dare such voice, now gone, be gentleman true?  Does such now ghost have “zero respect” for a “woman” who appears in thought of ghost not deserving such, as “lady”?

Best ghost stay gone, as ghost did not defend said “woman”, but perhaps felt “axe to grind”, as such “woman”.

Perhaps good taste tonight from woman to ghost now gone, be gone best for all, both woman and ghost.

A sincere thank you to whoever came to my defense.
I come here with no axe to grind and no agenda.
Let’s hope for more civility and good taste tomorrow.
Thanks again…

I was born in and lived in Europe for many years.
I still have many friends and relatives there.
I have traveled back and I read all the major European newspapers on line every week.
To say that one has NEVER met anyone who dos not like Americans or the greatness of America is probably the biggest clue to the veracity of the poster’s comments.
Take it from the source and watch further developments.

“the truth…60% of Americans want a lower cost non-profit public health insurance option.“

I’ll believe that when I see several reliable polls conclusively telling me that’s the case.  And I have yet to see one.  The folks I know and speak to (ie: educated, working people) want nothing to do with this unconstitutional interference.

Whatever the stat was you threw around earlier, about only 19% of the public claiming to be Republicans…you, and all elected officials, would do well to not misinterpret that statistic to mean that 81% of the public thinks Democrats and their agenda are the answer.  What everyone should see is a quickly eroding faith in either party to lead this country down an acceptable path.  If you follow the current statewide elections, Democrats are about to get their butts handed to them when 8 months prior, they were giddy at the prospect of riding the Obama marketing success into the governor’s mansion and control of the House.

It’s not looking quite as rosy now.  People became fed up with the Republicans and people are becoming fed up with the Democrats even faster.  It’ll be interesting to see how the 2010 federal elections shake out, considering Obama and the Democratic Congress are holding onto that must-have “stimulus” money until summer of the election year.  You know, all that money we HAD TO HAVE RIGHT NOW OR WE’LL ALL PERISH.

Most will find just cause to listen to the observations of Bono rather than some character who just does not believe the truth 60% of Americans want a lower cost non-profit public health insurance option.

Then, we have two gals who believe “Europeans like nothing better than to set America up for failure.“ and “the world wanted a weaker America”.  Oh, what foolishness.  Never traveled from Virginia, much less internationally?  I’ve traveled Europe several times, Canada, Mexico, other places.  Never found anyone who did not like Americans, America, and the greatness of our country.  However, as early as my 2003 visit to Europe, many did not care for nitwit arrogant Junior Bush, and during my 2005 trip they seemed bewildered we could have elected him again, but time passed, and the light once again began to shine.

You all open your hearts up now, let some sunshine replace some of that old bitter hatred.  Make yea feel better.

GuidoMcGinty-Hey go easy on the Irishmen!
Bono is a “bit” younger then me but he comes from my hometown and where I have doubted his sincerity from time to time he has produced some spectacular results.
And it always seems to be that whenever you watch one of those inspiring documentaries on PBS about some wretchedly poor village in Africa or South America invariably there is a dedicated doctor or nurse with an Irish accent right in the thick of things.
The Irish just don’t talk the talk they also walk the walk all over the world and in large numbes…
