Letters to the Editor: News Coverage Isn’t Always Accurate

News Coverage Isn't Always Accurate
Editor, Times-Dispatch: You are to be commended for printing a letter by China's noted dissident, Wei Jungshen, who contradicted an earlier editorial, "Ghosts," concerning Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's recent trip to China and her presumed lack of emphasis on China's deplorable human rights record. Wei, who had read the official transcripts of the meetings Pelosi had with Chinese officials, noted that she had brought up the human rights issue, together with other important U.S.-China issues such as trade.

An important point is embedded in this story. News coverage seeks to find a hook for such events, usually the official opening comments from guest and host. Pelosi, following good diplomatic techniques, did not try to beat the Chinese over the head with their bad behavior in a public forum. Issues such as these are best discussed in one-on-one meetings where a range of issues are covered and proposals, counter-proposals -- and hopefully, in time, progress, -- are made.

It may make headlines (and some people happy) when our leaders meet with foreign leaders and lecture them on their shortcomings. Much more can be accomplished in the long run through quiet diplomacy rather than the chest-thumping, America-knows-best rhetoric that characterized the first few years of the Bush administration.

Time to Stand Up To Federal Government
Editor, Times-Dispatch: Actions by Congress and the Obama administration to centralize power in Washington have raised my concern over the future of our free enterprise system and even our democratic way of life.

I served my country proudly for more than 28 years, including 56 combat missions over Vietnam. During that time I voted in every election -- but as a career military person, I remained nonpolitical so I would not compromise my principles and my support to my commander-in-chief.

When I see what is happening to our great country, I can no longer stand on the sidelines. Our political and economic systems are being challenged and we can't stand idly by and watch it happen. We must stand up now and reverse this progress toward socialism.

Virginians such as Thomas Jefferson and George Washington led the fight for our freedom and independence. Now it is our turn to carry on this great tradition. If we, the citizens of Virginia, don't stand up to stop this process, who will?

We have the opportunity to reverse this move toward socialism and take back control of our political process by electing a governor, lieutenant governor, and attorney general who know and understand Virginia. They will stand up against attempts by the federal government to usurp the powers of the states, and they will provide the leadership to get us through these tough economic times.

Join me in supporting Bob McDonnell and his team.

Pets Deserve to Have Guardians -- Not Owners
Editor, Times-Dispatch: A recent AP poll found that half of all Americans "consider their pets as much a part of the family as any other person in the household." But the article referred to these caring individuals as "owners." If Americans consider their animals equal family members, is owner truly the appropriate term to use?

A growing number of citizens, legislators, humane societies, and rescue organizations are replacing the term owner with animal guardian, recognizing that the term owner is outdated and doesn't reflect the human/animal bond that exists in our culture today. Guardian denotes a higher level of responsibility, caring, and respect to our animal companions. It sends a message that they are more than mere property. Guardian accurately describes the appropriate kindness and long-term care to one's family pet, teaching children respect, compassion, and kindness.

Studies show that children who learn compassion and respect for animals are more likely to become responsible adults. Seventeen cities, including St. Louis, Boulder, Beverly Hills, and the entire state of Rhode Island have incorporated the term "guardian" into their animal-related ordinances.

Carl Friedman, the former director of San Francisco's Department of Animal Care and Control, said, "Increased numbers of people thinking and acting as guardians of their animal companions will lead to fewer cases of abuse, neglect, and abandonment, and to fewer animals being killed in our nation's shelters."

The importance of language cannot be understated. It affects how we think and how we act. The dogs and cats who ask so little, and give back so much love and loyalty, deserve the protection and care the term guardian represents.

Health Care Town Hall Administered Dose of Fear
Editor, Times-Dispatch: When I heard about ABC's town-hall meeting at the White House, I immediately thought the president would be given softball questions. However, I was pleasantly surprised with Charles Gibson's and Diane Sawyer's design for the evening's battery of questions, which were tough and direct. They were targeted to the heart of the major issues surrounding health care reform.

I fault Gibson and Sawyer only for not calling President Barack Obama out and confronting his non-answers to many of the questions. Perhaps they were letting the television audience make up its own mind about the president's forthrightness.

Dr. Orin Devinsky asked, if Obama's wife or daughter could benefit from a treatment option that was not covered by the national health plan, would one "follow the greater good and sacrifice your loved ones for the good of insuring millions or would you do everything possible you could do for your family member?" Obama responded by discussing his grandmother's terminal cancer and whether her broken hip should be treated with hip replacement. He did not address the question.

Dr. John Corboy's question was also ignored when he asked, "If we could convince the American public that there are limits to what we can pay for with our health care system, who then will design and enforce the rules for the system?"

The bottom line for me is that I came away terrified that we are about to walk off a health care reform cliff. It appears the administration has not thought through many health system design questions and is totally motivated in changing the system to save it financially with disregard for the impact the changes will have on all consumers of the reformed medical services.

But Godfather, according to some I should not be able to quote things like this let alone modernize them. I seem to give out of date references that were written in 2009 or put on a CNN website just two days before. I do not know what I am saying and I should fear those of obvious inferior intellegince to myself.  I am supposed to support all change no matter how it will affect our nation. National organizations supported by millions that I referenced produce old articles but Intelligence agencies who are under fire for lying are referred to as autoritarian sources. I do not seek knowledge and have only unreliable sources even though millions of others use them daily.  Could it be because these sources support and defend our constitution and those who defame them are out to over throw its very base principles. I just wonder when I will be worthy to stand next to those who are so obviosly intent on our own government contolling every area of our lives and then they will be happy.
Martin Niemoeller’s quote refered to a threat in the 1930’s and notice how it applies today. No wonder I have no idea what I am saying because as has been quoted in other places in other discussions. I HAVE NOT DRANK THE KOOL AID.

I am reminded of the man I knew who spent his whole life thinking the government was the only way to run things.  When they came and got his neighbors house for not paying taxes he said it didn’t bother him as the government was only doing what it needed to keep running.  When it came and got another neighbors son for the military he said that the government was right becasue it had to protect the citizens of the country.  When it came and took everything he had he wondered how could a government be so all controlling that it could take everything a person had. Who had let them do that to him. He hollered and sued the government and he was told that you let us do all the other things to your neighbor now it is your turn.

Keep blowing your own horn and when the day comes when it is your turn please don’t look for others to help you. You are right and the rest of the world is wrong. Doesn’t matter that you don’t have a defensible point becasue your view is all that is right.  Sorry you feel that way because your day is coming sooner than you think and when it comes please remember that the Chairman and his minions are right this time.  You are as you speak.

Am reminded of couple of ole boys for whom my wife & I were HIV/AIDS advocates.  They’d talk back and forth, even in group discussions.  Got to point where they became oblivious to others around them.

No one told them how to think for themselves, as dementia had set in, and it was obvious their only survival was dependent upon the other’s reinforcement.  They seemed to sure love each other and what gibberish each had to say to the other.  As their immune systems diminished, one died with multiple conditions; then, the other.

Don’t know what’s worse to observe.  The decay of one’s mind or their body.  Oh, I reckon it is the mind.

MRRight: “You CANNOT teach an old lib new tricks. Its really kind of sad.“

And you cant get them to stop bleating their talking points.  No matter what you do, no one has told them how to think for themselves.

Credability check-

“I have also experienced foreign travel, several times to many countries of europe, to Canada—-to Mexico.
Never have I encountered any citizen there nor elsewhere who voiced criticism of their access to affordable quality health care.“

After a grandiose statement like that I find all other statements suspect.

FEAR?  Be fearful of change for the better?  While we appreciate reading an 8-yr old article from the conservative Heritage Foundation without much in way of statistics, and we appreciate viewing Doug Wright of Canada who has a cancerous tumor on his leg, has the extra money to travel to America, but finds no reason to do so because he is not having to wait for excellent treatment in Canada (but agreed, he is but one example).  Some of us may even appreciate knowing their exists a one-man army of a basement web site, Mark Valenti’s “Liberty Page” with direct contact to ole Mark at:  for all that he offers as hot stuff.  Perhaps a few, appreciate knowing how one fella really feels about Obama.  Oh, what a surprise?

All that said, THINK, seek knowledge, stay focused.  As to facts and statistics, each of us have two options:  (1) Statistical information from reliable sources that fully indicate we have a problem and the problem will eventually strangle America’s economy, likely for good; (2) B.S. from proven unreliable sources, the same for-profit greedy corporations who have been caught in past and in present, stealing from customers (insured & doctors) and will continue to do so unless we stop them, along with foolish gibberish from brainwashed folk who provide nothing more in quality info than recent dog poop from their shoe soles.

Will, good article in the Boston globe. Now what say you to this article about the same system

http://www.heritage.org/research/healthcare/hl711.cfm

Notice the differences in slants? Which one is right or are both of them.

Hey the truth (dubious) now that you are done with your temper tantrum and might be ready to listen to the rest of the story try going to this web site and read some of the articles about european health care.

http://www.angelfire.com/pa/sergeman/issues/healthcare/socialized.html

Or this article in CNN:
http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/health/2009/07/06/bash.canadian.healthcare.cnn

Nice right and this is what you want for us. No way.

So the european system is so much better than ours.  How about the 15000 people, age 75 or older, who died with cancer that could have been cured if the system had wanted it too.

When will you learn that every time you quote GDP and other government agencies, so now you suport the CIA, you never quote your own leader Mr. Obama.  He has already stated he does not want a European style system in the US. But Democrats just today said they would go it alone and pass their version without any indepenant or Republican support.  So no matter what the people want, 65% say they do not want a government run health care system, the Democrats, you so obviously are in boot step with them, are going to do what they want anyway despite what their constituents are telling them.  Sounds like a few other items they have recently passed.

By the way I have had much better people than you try to insult me to no avail.  I know my facts and am not afraid to answer questions.
I notice when you have no answers or are cornered that you have tendency to resort to your usual name calling and regurgitaion of the same facts in question. How long before you get really frustrated and leave this discussion after a large burst of name calling like you have left the last two you could not control.
