Inmate with escape history flees Lynchburg regional jail
Published: March 10, 2009
An inmate who escaped from Pittsylvania County authorities last year made a getaway from the Blue Ridge Regional Jail in Lynchburg this morning.
Larry Wayne Dodson Jr., 20, escaped from a recreation yard shortly after 10 a.m., said Elton Blackstock, director of the Blue Ridge Regional Jail.
Dodson was serving a seven-year, four-month sentence for grand larceny, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and the addition of a suspended sentence. He is from Sutherlin in Pittsylvania County.
Dodson did not escape using force, Blackstock said. It appears as though he managed to cut through some security screening and climbed down the building using bed sheets.
Dodson escaped from custody in May 2008 as he was being taken to the Pittsylvania County Jail in Chatham. He was recaptured, and transferred to the Lynchburg jail in December because of overcrowding at the Chatham facility, authorities there say.
Pittsylvania authorities have been notified of the escape and have issued an alert.
The Lynchburg Police Department is assisting in the search.

An inmate’s ability to escape reflects on the staff inability to supervise. Or should I say inability. Cameras in the “yard” are great for documentation purposes, but they don’t do much to stop a guy from cutting through the fence.
