Obama’s popularity slipping, according to poll of Va. voters

Public Policy Polling said President Obama’s numbers would be more favorable if more blacks and young voters were included in the survey, but the poll was designed to measure approval ratings in the context of the race for governor.
A new poll shows President Barack Obama's popularity slipping in Virginia.
Obama had an approval rating of 48 percent and disapproval rating of 46 percent in the Public Policy Polling survey of people who are likely to vote in this year's general election for statewide offices.
Obama carried the state in November with 52.6 percent of the vote.
The poll of 617 likely voters taken June 30 to July 2 has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points, so Obama could be above 50 percent. In national polls he has been around 60 percent.
The poll also shows a high level of polarization among the Virginia electorate. Ninety-five percent of Democrats gave Obama high marks, but only 9 percent of Republicans did.
But independents also rated Obama poorly, with 38 percent saying he is doing well and 52 percent saying he is not.
The sample was almost evenly divided among Democrats, Republicans and independents.
Public Policy Polling said Obama's numbers would be more favorable if more blacks and young voters were included in the survey, but the poll was designed to measure approval ratings in the context of the race for governor.
The same polling organization said Republican Bob McDonnell was receiving 49 percent of the vote to 43 percent for Democrat R. Creigh Deeds in the race for governor, with McDonnell getting a boost from independents. Fewer people are expected to vote in the governor's race than in last year's presidential contest.
"There are a couple ways to look at this," said Dean Debnam, president of Public Policy Polling. "You could argue in light of these numbers that it wouldn't be that helpful for Creigh Deeds to have Barack Obama come and campaign for him. At the same time, a primary purpose of Obama appearing would be to generate interest in the election among his base voters, who turned out last year but wouldn't generally vote in an off-year election and thus aren't getting polled."
Sen. Mark R. Warner, D-Va., remains popular, the poll showed. His approval rating of 57 percent was the fourth best of 34 senators the polling organization has surveyed on in the past year.
The poll also found that Gov. Timothy M. Kaine's approval rating of 49 percent is better than a year ago, when he polled at 46 percent. This is rare among governors, most of whom have seen their popularity slide.
Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., polled at 46 percent, about average among the senators.
A spokesman for the Democratic National Committee declined to comment on the survey results.
Tim Murtaugh, a spokesman for the Republican Party of Virginia, said the numbers show "that Virginia voters are not in tune with national Democratic politics."

How about fool you once shame on you , fool you twice shame on me. Just alittle wisdom to you stupid voters who drank kool aid and and put in MR. B.O. ( everything he touches Stinks!!) You always get the gov’t you vote for. We the smart people are sitting back laughing at at the rest of you fools who thought you were so Smart!! To hope for change from a bus driver!! In a few years we will see change that no one can stand or be brave enough to admit Mr.B.O. stinks!! Have a nice day!!
As I saw on a homeless guy’s sign “YES WE CAN HOPE FOR CHANGE! STARTING WITH QUARTERS FIRST!“
I actually gave him change because that sign cracked me up.
Well stated Baron.
All i have to say is be careful what you wish for BECAUSE NOW YOU HAVE IT. great, another Jimmy Carter…. at best. Hopefully this is only a one term administration. for all of our sakes. has anyone noticed that North Korea and Iran did not start acting up much worse after Bush was out of office ? And this Obama administration wants to cut the military. Brilliant move. Perhaps history will not demonize Bush so much. How do any of us know what lengths he went to to protect the american people. And one can not just blame a president for the state of a nation. We have this thing that was called a DEMOCRATIC congress that played a bit of a part. and yes, brainwashed immature voters looking to a grand utopian society that is unrealistic did have a major impact on the election. maybe civics should be a part of education again. But then again who would want that…keep society ignorant!!
Guess we will see a Poll Czar appointed shortly to make sure the numbers are what Mr. Obama wants. Time is coming shortly where Mr. O and his kool aid drinkers won’t be able to blame it on the pass. The Community Organizer knows one thing well and that is how to take our money and spend it on his socialist programs. Wait till we finally see what the so-called national health care plan will cost. And don’t forget your higher energy cost and taxes for Cap and Tax (Trade). Pray that in 2010 we can put a roadblock to this socialist movement in DC.
@ dkb123…
“Smoke and mirrors,“ you say?
Come on, please. You mean to tell me that a platform based on “hope” and “change you can believe in” is smoke and mirrors?
You’re obviously not considering that we have hope, and that hope will bring change. It’s change we can believe in because of the hopeful change that changes with all the hope we now have because of the change we can believe in. It’s hopefully going to change the things George Bush didn’t believe in because he didn’t have hope. George Bush caused World War I and the French and Indian War because of the lack of hope and change we could believe in. Plus, he’s trying to kill all the puppies.
I’m so thankful that we can hope for change with Obama, and hopefully that will change the hope of the changing hopefulness that comes with increased hope.
The less the Obama administration is able to sell all the woes of today as Bush left-overs, the more his voters are realizing that his campaign was largely smoke and mirrors. The true picture will become clear 8-12 months from now.
It’s going to go down more, they just issued the jobless numbers and guess what? Up Up Up…People wake up and stop this madness. To all you wealthy people out there , I hope you have a great accountant to hide your money so that your not taxed more than the rest. And to all my small business owners, watch out because the government does not care about you. I thougt that journalist had some kind of oath, than why don’t all new stations report everything and not just onesided? God Bless Us
I heard a good analogy about the Obama spending problem.
“It’s like somewhat who figures out they are driving in the wrong direction and instead of turning around, they step on the the gas.“
I can’t remember who said it, but it was a pretty solid analogy.
Since you start the article off stating that this survey doesn’t count most blacks and young voters these numbers are a joke. Remember . . the young voters had a HUGE impact during the election.
