Former VCU star Eric Maynor has his first NBA contract with the Utah Jazz that is worth about $2.7 million.
Former Virginia Commonwealth University star Eric Maynor made the first move of his NBA career a lucrative one, signing a guaranteed contract worth about $2.7 million yesterday with the Utah Jazz.
Utah did not release terms of the contract, but first-round draft picks in the NBA are guaranteed two years under the rookie salary scale. Maynor, the 20th pick in last week's draft, is due to make about $1.3 million this season and about $1.4 million in his second season under the scale.
Utah holds options for the third and fourth years.
Maynor was scheduled to take part yesterday in Utah's five-day minicamp, then make his debut in the Orlando Pro Summer League in Florida on Monday.
The two-time Colonial Athletic Association player of the year was the eighth point guard taken in the first 20 picks in the draft.
Utah is seeking a backup for starting point guard Deron Williams.

I played with Len for years. Even in his 50’s he could score against anybody, even current college players. What VCU has done to write him out of the record book is a shame. For those of you that don’t know Len, he had a stroke several years ago.

I spoke with a player from an opponent, High Point, to RPI during Len Creech’s tenure. He had to guard Len Creech. He said that he never saw anyone go up to shoot as fast as Len. He said one minute you were guarding him and the next minute you were looking at his belly button. Oh, did I mention the opposing player was Tubby Smith - yeah, that Tubby Smith, there is only one.
I have to say that Maynor is one of the best players to have played at VCU, but I wish they(VCU)would get the record straight. Why induct Len into the Hall of Fame if you are not going to recognize his accomplishments? See Below Len Creech was inducted into the VCU Hall of Fame in 1990. He played for VCU from 1966 - 69 when VCU was known as “RPI” and is the leading all-time scorer with 2,019 points (without the benefit of a 3-point line!). Len averaged a career-high 27.4 points per game in the 1965 season and is one of only two VCU players to score 500 points or more in three consecutive seasons.
Congratulations to Mr. Maynor. He brings some much-needed class to the NBA.
