Cosby’s Esteves prevails

Third-seeded Anjelica Esteves of Cosby upended No. 2 seed Stella Petrova (James River) 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the Dominion District girls tennis tournament final. Esteves and Petrova split their two matches during the regular season.
Esteves will play top-seeded Christine Abbott of Midlothian, the Dominion District player of the year, for the title Monday at Cosby at 3 p.m. Abbott, a freshman defeated unseeded Kim Morrissett of James River 6-0, 6-1.
In the doubles, top-seeded Anjelica Esteves and Erin Hickey of Cosby defeated Audrey Pfund and Meredith Warfield of Midlothian 7-5, 6-4 in the semifinals.
The freshmen team advanced after posting a 10-1 win over Manchester's Audrey Worsham and Emily Gaidowski in the quarterfinals. Also heading to the semis are Christine Abbott and Lauren Baxter (Midlothian), who defeated L.C. Bird's Abby Smith and Tracey Cole 10-0. James River's Stella Petrova and Kim Morissett held off Cosby's Lauren Blackwell and Bailey Kirchner 10-3.
Pfund and Warfield defeated Emily Malheiros and Rachna Pathik of James River in the quarterfinals.
Central District
Second-seeded Morgan Jones (Colonial Heights) defeated No. 1 Elizabeth Walsh 6-3 to claim the championship.
Jones posted a 6-3 win over Prince George's Katy Cash in the semifinals, and Walsh advanced after defeating Jordan Akers of Colonial Heights 6-0.
In the doubles, Walsh and teammate Shana Temple claimed the title after defeating Leanne Tucker and Jessica Melvin of Dinwiddie 6-2.
Walsh and Temple knocked out Matoaca's Emily Bell and Lesley Bennett 6-1 in the semis, and Tucker and Melvin held off Katy Cash and Cara Lucy (Prince George) 7-6 (8-6).

Top-seeded Emily Hahn (Douglas Freeman) defeated No. 2 Nicole Parker (Mills Godwin) 6-2, 6-1 to win the championship of the singles tournament. In doubles, Hahn teamed up with Elena Rusu and beat Parker and Meg Kristofak 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) for the title.
All four finalists advance to the Central Region tournament beginning Wednesday.
BOYS TENNIS
Colonial District
Kyle Parker of Mills Godwin defeated Douglas Freeman's Matt Waddell 6-0, 6-2 at Raintree Racquet Club to advance to the final as the No. 1 seed.
Hunter Koontz of Deep Run earned the No. 2 seed after rallying from a 4-2 deficit in the third set against Kevin McMillen of Mills Godwin, 6-1, 5-7, 6-4.
Parker and Koontz will square off in the final Monday at 4 p.m. at Raintree Racquet Club. The final for doubles will follow at 6.
Central District
Thomas Dale's Bruce Li defeated Scott Bristow (Prince George) 7-5 to capture the championship.
Li knocked out Prince George's Greg Wyche 6-1 in the semifinals, and Bristow eliminated Steven Bond of Matoaca 6-4.
In the doubles final, Bristow and Wyche defeated Li and Bill Riggs 6-4.
Bristow and Wyche held off Colonial Heights' Kyle Powers and Daniel Kong 6-1 in the semis, and Li and Riggs defeated Jimmie Bullock and Jacob Barnes (Prince George) 6-4.
Capital District
The teams of Shaowei Tu and Eric Smith (Atlee) and Arjun Venkatasubramian and Matthew Zimmerman (Henrico) sailed through both the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of the Capital District tournament in Doubles, meeting in the final.
Venkatasubramian and Zimmerman prevailed over Tu-Smith in three games, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, winning the district title.

Logan Melton was 3 for 3, with four runs, two doubles and four RBI for the Spartans, and J.T. Wauford struck out five in three innings and picked up the win.
Adam Vaughan drove in Rick Benson for Amelia Academy.
Steward will play Tidewater Academy in the semifinals today at 10 a.m. at Kenston Forest, with the championship game to follow at 2 p.m.
In another tournament game, T.J. Dobrucky went 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and a run as Blessed Sacrament Huguenot shut out Richmond Christian 10-0 in the quarterfinals.
Taylor Myers finished 3 for 3 with a run and an RBI, and pitchers Connor Paul, Gavin Paul and Brandon Holt combined to hold the Warriors to one hit.
