Notes: Wakefield to start Monday
Wakefield to start Monday; Peavy will pitch tonight
BALTIMORE - Tim Wakefield made it through an afternoon bullpen session yesterday without reporting any weakness in his legs, and Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona said the knuckleballer is on target to start Monday at Kansas City. Wakefield has experienced a strength deficiency in his legs, a condition related to back problems that sent him to the disabled list for five weeks and have limited him to two starts since the all-star break. Asked if the Monday assignment was a sure thing, Wakefield said: "In my mind, it is." Wakefield is 11-4 with a 4.22 ERA in 19 starts this season.
WHITE SOX: Jake Peavy is slated to make his first start with Chicago tonight. The 2007 NL Cy Young winner was acquired from San Diego at the July 31 trade deadline, but the right-hander has been on the DL since June 13 with a strained tendon in his right ankle. He was struck on his pitching elbow during a rehab game on Aug. 24.
YANKEES: New York starter Andy Pettitte finished his regular bullpen session and says he's ready to test out his tired left shoulder against the AL West leading Los Angeles Angels. Pettitte threw his bullpen yesterday in Seattle without any problems. Manager Joe Girardi says everything points to Pettitte starting Monday night against the Angels. Pettitte is 13-6 with a 4.14 ERA in 29 starts this season.
PHILLIES: Center fielder Shane Victorino was "feeling under the weather" and held out of the lineup last night against the Braves. Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel started Ben Francisco in center field, batting in Victorino's usual No. 2 spot in the order. Manuel declined to elaborate when asked about Victorino, who left the Phillies' game Thursday in the seventh inning after going 0 for 3.
ROCKIES: Closer Huston Street could return as early as tomorrow from biceps tendinitis that has sidelined him since Sept. 1. Colorado Manager Jim Tracy said Street reported no pain after a 15-pitch simulated game yesterday at Chase Field. Tracy said Street could be available for the finale of a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Colorado has converted seven of eight save opportunities in Street's absence, with Franklin Morales saving six games in that stretch. Street has 33 saves in 34 chances.
ANGELS: Manager Mike Scioscia isn't commenting on talks with MLB officials about umpires' complaints against the team's coaching staff. Scioscia and general manager Tony Reagins have spoken with Mike Port, baseball's vice president for umpires, and Bob Watson, MLB's vice president for discipline. Umpires claim Los Angeles coaches were "unprofessional and unbecoming" after two late close calls went against them in a 9-8 loss in Boston on Wednesday night.
METS: Two-time all-star Carlos Delgado had another setback while rehabbing from right hip surgery and it appears increasingly unlikely that he'll be able to return to the N.Y. lineup before the season ends. Sidelined since May 11, Delgado tried to run last weekend but his hip became inflamed. The Mets would like to see Delgado return this season, even if just for a quick glimpse of his skills. That could help them make a decision about next year.
ORIOLES: Rookie outfielder Nolan Reimold has been placed on the 15-day disabed list with tendinitis in his left Achilles' tendon, ending his season. Reimold has been battling the injury for the most of the season. He is expected to undergo surgery Wednesday. After a rehabilitation program of three to four months, he is expected to return for the start of spring training.
RAYS: Senior adviser Don Zimmer was back at the ballpark less than three weeks after back surgery. Zimmer visited the Tampa Bay clubhouse before last night's game against Toronto and said he is feeling good. He had successful surgery for decompression of a nerve in his lower back on Sept. 2. - From Wire Reports
