Redskins joining the Jay Cutler bidding?

» 11 Comments | Post a Comment

When big names hit the market, the Redskins always seem to find their way into the rumor mill.

It's no different with Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler. Denver is accepting trade offers, citing Cutler's inability to work with new coach Josh McDaniels.

The Redskins already have a young quarterback in Jason Campbell, but his contract expires at the end of the season, and the sides have not been working on an extension. The Broncos would likely want a quarterback as part of any trade involving Cutler - their current backup is Chris Simms, who has thrown just two passes since 2006.

Other teams in the running include Tampa Bay, Detroit, Chicago, Minnesota and the New York Jets.

Redskins Executive Vice President Vinny Cerrato was in meetings regarding the upcoming NFL draft yesterday, and a spokesman said the team would not comment. One week ago, coach Jim Zorn dismissed the rumors at the league meetings in California.

"No, I think that was somebody's blog," he told reporters. "I haven't been involved with that."

The Denver Post reported yesterday that the Redskins were "among the leading candidates" to land Cutler.

The Cutler drama also involves former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan, who groomed the quarterback and likely will rejoin the coaching ranks in 2010. Whichever team lands Cutler could have a leg up in attracting Shanahan.

Shanahan was on the golf course while Tuesday's drama played out - he got a hole-in-one.

. . .

The Redskins have agreed to terms with defensive end Phillip Daniels, bringing back a familiar face from the past.

The 36-year-old tore his ACL on the first day of training camp last year, prompting the team to trade for Jason Taylor.

Daniels will rejoin Renaldo Wynn, who signed last month. The two will compete in training camp and potentially against a draft pick or other acquisition.

Other free agent players who have yet to land with teams include linebacker Marcus Washington, center Pete Kendall and linebacker Khary Campbell. The Redskins had indicated that they would like to re-sign these players, but it would have to be at prices that made sense for the team, given its small remaining salary-cap space.

There was an article in the Washington Post that said the Broncos didn’t want to do the deal b/c they didn’t want Jason Campbell… Well, sounds like they were pretty smart. I wouldn’t want him either… Enjoy another subpar season Deadskins!!!!

...and Cutler’s been traded to the Bears.  Way to go, Snyder.  Is there anything else you can do to destroy team morale?

Please make it stop! The Redskins have jerked Campbell around his whole career and to his credit he has not strangled Snyder or Cerrato - yet. Talk about courage under fire. I admire Campbell’s character for that. I don’t think he will ever be a ‘top-of-the-line’ NFL QB, but I think he can get the job done. All he, and the ‘Skins’, need now is for the annual Snyder dog-and-pony show to pull the rug out from underneath any continuity or stability in personnel. That’s what a Cutler trade would do. By the way, whut’s up with Cody Brennan?

It’s good to know that I’m not the only one who thinks the biggest liability to the entire Redskins franchise is Dan Snyder.

Give Cutler the Skins’ O-line from last season and the Skins’ WRs and see what his QB rating is.  You don’t need a “franchise” QB to win a Super Bowl.  That’s been proven repeatedly.  Continuity helps though.

Give Campbell decent protection, several excellent receivers and 2 or 3 years in the same system and he’s more than capable of leading the team to the Super Bowl.

Instead, Snyder will continue to make “improvements” and the Skins will continue to be mediocre.  After another disappointing season or two, Snyder win hire an “upgrade” coach and Zorn will be gone.  What have Skins fans done to deserve this fate?

Well said Tcox, we might be better off sticking with Campbell its not like he’s a bust.  And he hasn’t had great targets to throw to either, Moss is great but Randle el isn’t productive and both of them are under 6 ft tall.  In today’s NFL at least 1 of your starting WRs should be 6’1” or taller.  Cutler has that chip on his shoulder though, sometimes a QB needs to be that way to really inspire a team & Campbell comes across as way too laid back and country, but i know he’s a standup guy he just needs to have more of a presence, sometimes in post-game news conferences he seems as if he is trying to blend in and not get noticed, i hope he doesnt act like that in the huddle.

fatz: There are reasons a team might want to look into a new quarterback that have nothing to do with skin color. The Redskins weren’t thinking about race when they spent three picks (essentially) to draft Campbell, and they aren’t thinking about race when weighing whether Cutler would be an upgrade. Personally, I hope the Redskins don’t get a chance to overpay for Cutler, and I definitely agree with you that Cutler seems awfully selfish and immature…something nobody can say about Campbell. The best thing that could happen for the Skins is for somebody else to land Cutler and for Campbell to have a great year and be the man going forward. I do think Campbell could help himself by being more assertive and outwardly competitive. Presence is a big part of being a franchise QB.

What does being black have to do with being a mediocre quarterback? You either can or you cannot excel as a quarterback in the NFL. Race doesn’t matter. What an inane statement.

Fatz, i dont think anybodymind’s Jason Campbell’s blackness, its more about his slow decision-making, failure to make plays.  Redskins and Broncos had the same record last year, Cutler did it with 31st ranked defense, Campbell did it with the 4th ranked defense, Campbell had Portis at RB, Cutler went through 7 RB’s and ended up WITH A WHITE RUNNING BACK. Sucks being a black QB? That’s comical, try being a white RB.  Cutler and Campbell were both +7 in TDs - Ints, i won’t say Cutler is a gigantic improvement and we could still compete with Campbell, but Cutler is clearly the better QB who gets the ball down the field much more often, but its all about what we have to trade to get him.

It sucks being a black quarterback in the NFL.  All Campbell has done is improve his quarterback rating every year with a different offensive coordinator. At least Campbell has taken a team to the playoffs. Cutler and the Broncos completely collapsed last year and this is the guy Snyder wants to lead his team. Its obvious there is something wrong with Cutler when a guy who has coached super bowl winning QB gets rid of him.  I hope Cutler joins the line of overly paid redskins players since Snyder has been the owner. As long as he is the owner, skins will never be a serious contender again. R.I.P. #21
