ATLANTA — The Michael Vick era in Atlanta is officially over.

Atlanta Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff said the team relinquished its contractual rights to Vick on Friday.

“Michael remains suspended by the NFL,“ Dimitroff said. “However, in the event NFL commissioner Roger Goodell decides to reinstate Michael, we feel his best opportunity to re-engage his football career would be at another club.“

The move was no surprise. Owner Arthur Blank has said Vick would not return to the Falcons.

Goodell has not committed to reinstating Vick after the quarterback completes his 23-month sentence on July 20 for running a dogfighting ring.

If he were a teacher, political figure, or some other position in the public eye or in a position to influence young peoeple, there would be no discussion about his job. He wouldn’t have one period, others have lost their jobs for breaking far less serious laws and barbaric acts. Why should he be held to any other standard? He made a HUGE mistake, he lost his job and learned there are consequences when you BREAK THE LAW.

Dog-fighting, hunting, and industrial meat production are just not analogous moral situations; there are actually valid reasons behind harvesting animals for food production. Dog-fighting lacks that distinction.

......lovin @ 4:17 pm…...At first,  I was aggravated with your thought process…..How could anyone not understand?.....Could you be that, naive?....Then I thought, maybe your reading comprehension is very lacking…..OR, this is just a game with you and your buddies there, reading the monitor and laughing your proverbial rear ends off?.......Act stupid and see how mad you can make others…........Now, here is the part where you state you know exactly what you are saying, and you understand everything, and it is the rest of the world that is wrong…..........If you are a representation of Vick’s supporters, Vick is in more trouble than he knows….........

B, the way criminals are housed really has nothing to do with this, but I would be interested to know if you have some viable alternative. I deifnitely don’t care about dogs more than humans, but that also doesn’t mean I think we can treat dogs any way we want. There is middle ground.

I haven’t hunted much, but I’m pretty positive the animals are dead before they’re hung and bled. Not EXACTLY the same.

Last, no I didn’t try to adopt one. I have a baby at home, and besides her safety I’m not really in a position to take care of an animal right now. I do hope to have one in the not too distant future though.

That an employer would not re-hire a convicted dog-fighter is a reasonable decision when you consider that their revenue is in part based on 3rd party sponsorship. The NFL is vaguely aware of their impact on society at large, but it’s certainly more aware of the economic impact of negative publicity. I don’t know what will have to happen before Vick can clear that stigma, but it is stigmatized for a reason; senseless violence is not ok. That other cultures exhibit violent traditions justifies absolutely nothing other than a broader criticism of those values and traditions. The NFL could be filled with scum, and that’s their own decision towards the public’s perception, but it doesn’t justify dog-fighting, it only illustrates the NFL’s operating philosophy as being amorally business oriented.

dogtired, I agree with your post.  My mind can’t grasp the gruelty Vick and his cohorts put these poor dogs through.  And, like you, I believe there is a special place for those people….a place I don’t ever want to see.

So the concept of cause and effect eludes you still. Any idea why he was suspended by the NFL? Can you stretch your brain and see if you can think of any reason why the Falcons might be letting him go? Anything…any situations that might have happened over the last few years with Mike Vick’s life popping out to you and making you think, “Hmmm…Oh, thaaat’s why they fired him. Nowww I get it.“ Is that happening for you. Any logical thought processing going on?

Probably not. I guess if they didn’t include the actual words “dog fighting” in the story that it has nothing to do with it. You’re probably right, has nothing to do with it at all.

I give. Please have the last word. It’s obviously impossible to have intelligent debate with you.

Its exactly the same.  Their throats are cut, or they are hung upside down and bled to death.  Whether you are under water or your throat is cut im pretty sure suffocating to death feels the same.  Also, dont say a word about humane when Thousands of crimals are forced to live in 3 by 5 feet cells for years.  YES, thet are criminals, some may deserve it, BUT it is not humane.  You people care more about these dogs then humans.  I am also willing to bet the ones that talk the most junk did nothing to adopt any of these dogs

Somegeye, please point out to me where it says he is being let go because of dogfighting? Don’t you think they would have BEEN let him go while he was serving time if that was the case??? They just let him out of his contract. Maybe you are not getting it, but I can read VERY WELL!! And I stated that yes, the dogs were hurt from dogfighting, but they STILL were too messed up to live after the fight so YES Vick or his ppl put the dogs out of their misery.

And I don’t see how you can not see the similarities between hunting and dogfighting. Both are for entertainment to me. People hunt for fun NOT just for food. Who really has to hunt for their food these days??? And the dogs were not “tortured” like you try to make it seem. They were FIGHTING, got messed up, and were put to sleep. Its not like Vick was just electrocuting and drowning dogs for the fun of it! C’mon now, you are really trying to make him into a monster. Now the people that hunt, they deliberately AIM to KILL!!! I’m sure if the dogs fight and are not hurt badly, they STAY ALIVE!!! Maybe something is not clicking for you, but I understand my stance of this issue just FINE!!!

Max61, you should have just left it alone because you still have me confused and I still don’t get your point? I really don’t care that he has kids, either way, they were not hurt I’m sure by this situation. They still have a father, they are still being taken care of….Now Vick is a waste of life because he fough dogs? C’mon. Be for real. You are really getting carried away. And you don’t know what he has done to make up for this situation. If he stops doing this, which I’m sure he will, that is a lesson learned and everyone has to LEARN from mistakes in life. So get off his back and let the LORD judge him like someone stated before…
