Max & Erma’s files for bankruptcy protection

PITTSBURGH — Max & Erma’s Inc. has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection from its creditors, listing between $1 million and $10 million in debts.

The hamburger and casual dining chain, based in Columbus, Ohio, has 79 company-owned restaurants and 27 owned by franchisees. Most are in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan, though the chain has a few locations in Kentucky and in Chicago, Atlanta and Washington, D.C.

The restaurants remain open. Max & Erma’s has two Richmond-area restaurants, both in western Henrico County.

G&R Acquisitions, which is based in Pittsburgh, bought Max & Erma’s for $10.2 million in April 2008.

Documents filed Friday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Pittsburgh said Max & Erma’s has between 200 and 999 creditors.

Typically, companies file for Chapter 11 protection so they can reorganize or restructure debt without the pressure of paying creditors.

My three experiences there have all been horrible. Bad food, even worse service. Entirely not surprising. Good riddance.

John Rolfe (ridgefield) Max and Erma’s closed down last month with no notice to employees or anything.  So this is not a surprise.

DKB123:

“...never too crowded…“

That apparently holds true for the whole chain

M&E has great food, great service, and a very family friendly atmosphere. Their curb-side take out service is very good as well. They cook fresh food on the stop and do not serve pre-frozen meals like some others do. Their location on West Broad Street is very easy to find. Prices are very reasonable too.

Always had a good meal and experience at M&E. Very good burgers. Never too crowded and service has always been good. Only complaint was that they don’t offer a chicken caesar salad. We hope they survive.

I find these comments very interesting, because I’ve been to the Ridgefield Max & Erma’s numerous times, for both lunch and dinner, and I’ve never had a bad experience with the waitstaff or the food.  I guess one man’s meat is another man’s poison…

I too had one of those coupons, which is why I made my first and last trip to M&E’s.  The food was disgusting, and the ‘atmosphere’ sparse yet tacky.  Though I know the food at a chain restaurant is going to be mediocre at best, M&E’s is the foulest of them all.  Fail!

yeah, it’s realy odd, I mean what is the hook for this place?  what was supposed to make it any better than anyplace else?

If I had kids, I would not let them eat the desert in there…  I watched them fix this ice cream where the kids dip the spoon into the toppins and put it on the Ice Cream.

NOW we all know, kids do not really wash their hands and they have been on everything including YOU KNOW WHAT.  As I watched each of them use the same spoon for dipping, the parents were also helping them with the spoon and they too are using the same spoon… more hands on these same spoons.

Now tell me if this is not gross.  The kids are eating after they had their hands on this spoon which all the other kids have had their hands on, and now you have the adult parents putting their hands on the same spoon.

About that same time, the waitress came to pick up my dinner plate, and than asked if I would like to get some Ice cream as I can put whatever topping on it.

I looked at her and than took a look at what I had just seen, and all I could vision was… WHAT topping would I really be putting on the Ice Cream after all the hands had been on these spoons.
