The Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation awarded Saint Paul's College a $120,000 grant for scholarships for the 2009-2010 academic year.

The grant will assist 25 female students at the school in Lawrenceville.

"The Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation has been a bedrock of scholarship support for Saint Paul's College students for more than 28 years," said Dr. Robert L. Satcher Sr., Saint Paul's president.

"Several of our students have been recipients of this unprecedented generosity . . . several of them have been motivated to become high achievers and have gone on to have very successful careers."

This grant is especially timely for students during the nation's economic upheaval, Satcher said.

A Lettie Pate scholarship grant allowed Saint Paul's to provide more than 100 female undergraduate students with financial assistance last year.

The foundation's scholarship program provides grants to schools and colleges for deserving female students. The foundation does not award grants to individuals.

Based in Georgia, the foundation also supports elderly women in selected nursing homes and hospices in Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia.

The foundation was chartered in 1946 to assist low-income Christian girls and women in nine states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
