John Randolph Foundation awards $305,000 in health-related grants

The John Randolph Foundation has awarded $305,000 to 18 nonprofit organizations working on health and quality of life issues in Hopewell and the surrounding areas.

Grants for health care, mental health, mental retardation, prevention or wellness went to:

  • Hopewell Emergency Crew, $26,000 to help purchase two Physio-Control LifePak 12 cardiac monitors and defibrillators.

  • Pathways, $15,000 to fund the health and wellness program costs for unemployed young adults who did not graduate from high school and may also have substance abuse issues.

  • Prevent Blindness Mid-Atlantic, $24,000 for the Certified Children's Vision Screening program in 39 public schools.

  • Crater Health District Resource Mothers Program, $10,000 for an outreach position to promote healthy teen-pregnancy outcomes in Hopewell.

  • Southside Virginia Emergency Crew, $10,000 to help purchase a Zell E Series cardiac monitor and defibrillator.

  • The American Heart Association Mid-Atlantic Affiliate, $20,000 for the Search Your Heart and Power to End Stroke campaigns in Hopewell and Prince George County.

  • The James House Intervention/Prevention Services, $10,000 for operating expenses.

  • Gateway Homes, $25,000 for charitable care given to 24 indigent mentally ill residents.

  • Southside Sheltered Workshop, $20,000 for general operating expenses.

Educational or quality of life grants went to:

  • Virginia Network of Nonprofit Organizations, $5,000 for capacity-building and networking activities for small-to-midsized nonprofit agencies.

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters, $12,500 to support 12 school-based matches in Hopewell for 2009-2010.

  • Colonial Heights Food Pantry, $15,000 for operating expenses.

  • Elder Homes Corporation, $15,000 for accessibility and energy conservation improvements for 10 homes in the Hopewell-Prince George area.

  • Feed More, $20,000 for operating expenses, with emphases on services in Hopewell and Prince George.

  • Hopewell Recreation and Parks, $30,000 for the Respite Care Program ($23,000), the Rainbow Summer Program ($2,000) and the Youth Sports League ($5,000).

  • Hopewell-Prince George American Red Cross, $22,500 for operating expenses.

  • Serenity, $15,000 for HIV/AIDS support services.

United Way of Hopewell-Prince George, $10,000 to assist with the shortfall of the 2009 campaign goal for funding health-related agencies.
