Rose Gary's husband is disabled by stroke and diabetes, and the retired mail handler has exhausted her savings trying to make ends meet.

"When the utilities are cut off and it's cold and there's no light, you just don't know who to turn to," Gary said.

In the face of her energy emergency last March, she sought help from Dominion Resources Inc.'s EnergyShare program.

"It's life-saving," the 59-year-old Richmond woman said. "Thank you so much for EnergyShare."

Yesterday, Dominion Resources added $1 million to its contribution to its crisis energy assistance program for this winter's heating season. In October, the state's largest energy company had also made a corporate donation of $1 million to its EnergyShare program.

Donations from Dominion, its customers and employees support EnergyShare, not funds from customers' utility bills.

The program, administered by the United Way of Greater Richmond and Petersburg, helps people facing financial crises heat their homes after other aid has run out.

"It's a nice Thanksgiving and Christmas present for the community," said Sherrie Brach, the United Way's CEO.

Donations to EnergyShare totaled more than $7 million last winter, when the program helped more than 18,000 families in Virginia, North Carolina and Ohio, where the company is a local energy provider.

"We recognize that our customers are being affected by economic hardships that have not been seen in several generations," Thomas F. Farrell II, Dominion's chairman, president and chief executive officer, said in a statement.

To qualify for the program's help, applicants have to live in Dominion's service area and meet at least one of the following standards:

  • be in jeopardy of losing their primary heat source;

  • meet income eligibility requirements as determined by screening agencies;

  • be out of work; or

  • be having a personal or family crisis.

Those eligible can receive a one-time payment of up to $600 per heating season. The funds can be used to pay for any type of heating: oil, coal, wood, kerosene, natural gas or electricity.

During its 27-year history, EnergyShare has raised more than $35 million and helped more than 180,000 families.

http://www.renewableenergyworld.com/rea/blog/post/2009/11/1-9-million-jobs-in-new-energy?cmpid=WNL-Thursday-November19-2009

1.9 million jobs in new energy.

http://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/report-solar-electricity-cost-likely-fall-50-in-2009/

The levelized cost for other types of renewable electricity, such a wind and geothermal, are expected to drop 10 percent in 2009 over 2008.

These levelized cost don’t take into account any government subsidies.

“It’s incredibly exciting. The price of photovoltaics has plummeted this year, and we are seeing that opening up new markets that wouldn’t have made sense before,“ Chase said. “Governments around the world are going to cut subsidies, but they are still going to see a buoyant demand for solar.“

Major solar energy markets are European countries, such as Germany, Spain and increasingly Italy, as well as the U.S. and Japan. China and India recently announced or implemented solar incentive programs, which will help create demand for their domestic manufacturers and enable them to meet any pledge for reduction greenhouse gas emissions (see India Wants 20GW of Solar by 2020 and Here Comes China’s $3B ‘Golden Sun’ Projects).

Dominion has great management.  Their stocks are low growth that I have never lost a penny on.
Instead of whining about what they are not doing, invest in them and contribute five dollars a month to the people that are truly in need through Energy Shares.

Scott - you seem to think that a corporation like Dominion is one greedy guy sitting in office collecting money. In reality it is your friends and neighbors working for a living, making and delivery electricity to your home.
If you really want solar and wind to be your only generation, prepare yourself for many dark, cold nights…it is not a reliable as you think or hope that it could be. And it is very expensive.

“you are demanding that Dominion (the employees and customers) voluntarily give more money to this program?“

Nope, I am demanding that Dominion do more to promote renewable energy and energy independence.

Scott Burger wrote:  “We can be satified with the crumbs that Dominion throws us, or we can demand real change.“ So you are saying that you are demanding that Dominion (the employees and customers) voluntarily give more money to this program?  I say it’s good that Dominion, their employees and customers do this for people that need it.  I’d sure hate to be your neighbor if my lights when out and I couldn’t pay my bill, I suppose I couldn’t just go over there to your solar heated home and keep warm…..

What a great guy you are!

We can be satified with the crumbs that Dominion throws us, or we can demand real change.

Oh, and how much have you guys donated to Energy Share?

Scott, give it a rest with the solar pushing. We can all count on you to appear on every article that mentions Dominion. We know you work for an alternative energy company. Find other ways to advertise your products. I fail to see how Dominion donating two million dollars to a program designed to help the less fortunate relates to solar panels on the roofs of New Jersey schools.

And anyone else that is bashing them for ‘not donating enough’, would you have been happier had they donated zero dollars to the cause? They are not required to support the program at all. They are here to make a profit. Imagine that.

Wow, so you guys found a way to pounce on Dominion, eh?  If you read the article and I will quote it here “Donations from Dominion, its customers and employees support EnergyShare, not funds from customers’ utility bills.“  That means that most of the employees and other more fortunate customers pay for this for the needy and NOT out of your bill.  So thanks for turning this article into your little vendetta.

Still on that unreliable solar Scott?
