The number of Virginians traveling by car, bus, train or airplane during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend is expected to increase about 3 percent compared to last year, motor club AAA said this morning.

In the state, about 1.5 million Virginians will be traveling 50 miles or more away from home.

Martha M. Meade with AAA Mid-Atlantic attributed the increase in travel year to the “growing sense that most of the global economic crisis may just be behind us.“

However, travel during last year’s Thanksgiving holiday weekend was down 3.5 percent compared with the same period in 2007.
