Credit counselors are busy at ClearPoint
More people sought credit counseling in January from Henrico County-based ClearPoint Credit Counseling Solutions than during any other month in the nonprofit's 29-year history.
Thirteen months into this recession, 9,815 clients booked credit-counseling sessions nationwide with ClearPoint. A month prior, 7,902 people sought assistance, spokesman Bruce McClary said.
To bulk up savings, McClary said, people should have money direct-deposited into accounts set aside for emergencies. Leaving credit cards at home is another way to keep from adding to your debt.

I was scraping by a few years ago, but living ok, paying the bills just fine. Went back to college to get my degree and increased my salary over 30k/year. I essentially maintain the same frugal lifestyle and as a result, am able to put over 50% of my take-home pay into various short and long-term savings. It can be done.
