The number of foreclosure filings in Virginia rose 23.5 percent from June to July, as the foreclosure crisis escalated here and across the country.

The statewide filings increased 11.5 percent in July from the same month a year ago, RealtyTrac reported yesterday. Filings include default notices, scheduled auction sales and bank repossessions.

Nationwide, U.S. foreclosure activity rose 7 percent from June to July and 32 percent in July from the same month last year, the online foreclosure researcher reported.

One in every 355 U.S. households received a foreclosure notice in June.

By comparison, one in every 511 households in Virginia -- or a total of 6,404 households -- received a filing, showing that the foreclosure rate here is better than the national rate but has been rising faster.

One in 355?  That’s 0.2% or two tenths of a percent.  Talk about making a mountain out of a mole hill.
