Workers remodel the Circuit City store in Short Pump as electronics retailer hhgregg prepares to open there and elsewhere locally.

Work has begun to transform two former Circuit City stores in the Richmond area into locations for consumer-electronics and appliance retailer hhgregg.

Indianapolis-based hhgregg will open two stores by Thanksgiving, and a third store is in the works. These will be the retailer's first locations in Virginia.

The chain will take over former Circuit City locations near Short Pump Town Center, Chesterfield Towne Center and The Shops at White Oak Village.

A company spokeswoman yesterday would say only that two stores would open by Thanksgiving but declined to say where.

But EDC, a Chesterfield County-based general contracting and construction-management firm that specializes in retail projects, is working now to get the Short Pump and Chesterfield locations ready for hhgregg by November. EDC also expects to begin work soon on the White Oak Village store in eastern Henrico County, but a start date has not been set.

"We are demolishing and gutting the interiors of these [Short Pump and Chesterfield] stores and getting the buildings ready per hhgregg's prototype," said Jeff Duffy, EDC's vice president. "We're waiting on them for the White Oak store."

The store near Chesterfield Towne Center will get the biggest makeover, he said. It will get a bigger loading dock -- to accommodate three trucks, compared with one now -- and the exterior front will look different to match hhgregg's prototype.

The stockroom at that store also will serve as a regional warehouse for hhgregg's Richmond-area operations. The 43,500-square-foot store, at the southeast corner of Huguenot Road and West Koger Center Boulevard, was about 30 percent larger than any of Circuit City's other stores in the area.

Henrico-based Circuit City, once the nation's second-largest consumer-electronics chain, closed its last stores in March.

Besides opening stores in the Richmond market, hhgregg plans to add multiple stores this year in Tampa, Fla., and Memphis, Tenn. -- both markets where Circuit City formerly had a strong presence.

The chain sells electronics and appliances by using a commissioned sales staff.

I give them a year before they pull out. Richmond is too small to support it, Best Buy, WalMart, Target…that’s enough for this size a city. Circuit City not surviving in it’s hometown should be a giant red flag for any similar company. Not to mention the stellar economy, prob not the best time to be expanding.

My experience with HH Gregg is that they have a limited selection. The NC stores have very little as far as computer gear and software. I hope they do better here. Best Buy needs some competition. The Best Buy stores here are about the worst I have been in.

I have been waiting to buy a hd wide screen tv. Hope they have better prices than I am finding elsewhere. Also needs to be a Sony, after watching a Sony nothing else is as sharp and clear to me.

If they are priced lower then Best Buy then I will shop there if not then I won’t waste my time.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad they are bringing jobs to the area, but I’ll stick to buying stuff off the internet, I would like to see one thing you can get cheaper in store like HHGreg compared to legit places on the inet like amazon.com.

**Not to be confused with the other poster.**

I actually welcome hhgregg. I refuse to go in Wal-Mart or Worst Buy, so I can’t wait to have another option.

A commissioned sales staff that might actually help you b/c they make money off your sale vs. worthless hourly Circuit City employees… Yea, I’ll take the commissioned staff any day! If you don’t like it, just buy off the internet.

uncheel- Seems nothing makes anyone happy now days. If they are commissioned sales people then you’re mad because they’ll be badgering you but if they were just paid by the hour like Circuit City and you walk in and get NO SERVICE then you complain about that, so you need to make up your mind.
If you don’t like commission sales and no one badgering you then don’t shop at hhgregg and go to Wal-Mart where you’ll get no help at all. That’s the beauty of having multiple retail places to shop or better yet shop the internet and no one has to talk to you.

Welcome hhgregg and thanks for bringing jobs to the area.

WELCOME hhgregg! I shopped there when I lived in Indy and always enjoyed my experience there.  The other good thing about this company is that it is still run by the Gregg family!  Can’t wait until they are open!

Something about a commissioned sales staff makes this place have the credibility of a used car lot.  The last thing I want is some pimpled face high school student badgering me about buying something.
