Outer Banks Seafood to move into vacated Stony Point Fashion Park space

Out with the burritos, in with the fish.

In early December, the Outer Banks Seafood Co. is expected to open in Stony Point Fashion Park.

The restaurant, which opened its first location this spring in Corolla, N.C., is taking over the space vacated by Uncle Julio's Rio Grande Café, which abruptly closed in February 2007.

Mike Bishal, CEO of the restaurant that bills itself as a "traditional coastal eatery," said the concept for the Outer Banks location is to "help folks kick back and relax" with the soothing colors of its décor and provide "good, unpretentious food."

That same idea will be mimicked in Richmond.

"We don't want to be known as the expensive place or the inexpensive place," Bishal said. "We like to use the word value. We can't tell everyone what a value is -- we let them tell us."

The current menu for the Outer Banks Seafood Co. includes shrimp and grits with apple-smoked bacon; sliced bistro steak with a flat iron grilled lobster tail; crab-stuffed flounder and shrimp; and Crabmeat Remick with Swiss cheese au gratin.

Heading the culinary side of the restaurant is Chef Wes Stepp, who previously owned the Red Sky Café in Duck and worked as the executive chef at Kelly's Outer Banks Restaurant & Tavern in Nags Head.

The Stony Point location is the restaurant's first expansion from its North Carolina base, but Bishal expects to eventually move into Charlottesville, Northern Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland.

Hiring for the Richmond location is expected to begin Monday at the restaurant.

"We have Richmond folks who call the Outer Banks 'Richmond East,'" he said. "We want to be where we know there is a fan base for the Outer Banks."

I actually ate at this restaurant in OBX.  It was GREAT! We spoke with the manager that had no idea we were from Richmond and told us about the potential location and we gave him the go ahead as local residents.  The food was amazing! Chef Wes is great! I had the seared tuna and it was amazing. Great portions for the price.  The seafood at this restaurant will bring customers from all surrounding areas.  Can’t wait!

I give this place 6-8 months.

I see the resident RTD blog financial geniuses are giving their “sound” advice…ahem.

This is the perfect site to put a seafood restaurant and I know it will be quite successful.

There is a Bonefish Grill in Charlotte. I thought it was ok. I would like to see something like a Mayflower that is in NC. Good Catfish and great food for a reasonable price. Or something like the Kingfish chain in KY

This is VERY good news. I love the OBX and it’s cuisine and was a fan of the Rio Grande too. Good location, and Stony Point is a great place to eat (uh, but not shop, at least for me). Opening in December? Sounds like by New Year’s I’ll have about three meals to my credit.

Thanks for the news Ruggieri.

This is good news. Hopefully they will do great here. I can’t wait!      Whityy1, if Captain D’s is your best shot at eating seafood in Richmond, maybe you should spend a little more time searching for “seafood not previously frozen” restaurants. Ever heard of the Bonefish Grill? Let’s get behind these folks and give them a try.

I have lived here for about 8 months and Richmond seems to be lacking in good seafood places. I think a Mayflower or a Kingfish would do well here. I am sick of Captain Ds.
