Two retailers are expected to open within a day of each other this month.

Appliance and consumer electronics retailer hhgregg is scheduled to open its two area stores Nov. 19 while outdoor gear and clothing retailer Recreational Equipment Inc. (known as REI) is scheduled to open Nov. 20.

Both are new to Richmond's retail landscape.

Indianapolis-based hhgregg will open in two former Circuit City locations -- at Short Pump Town Center in western Henrico County and at Chesterfield Towne Center in Chesterfield County.

The chain could open at least two additional stores in the Richmond market.

Andrew Eaton, hhgregg's regional manager for the Richmond area, said the retailer has hired about 100 employees, who are completing their training this week.

The retailer sells TVs and appliances as well as digital cameras, computers, luggage and Serta mattresses.

Seattle-based REI's store is in West Broad Village in western Henrico.

The 26,500-square-foot, two-story store will feature a bicycle shop as well as camping, fitness, hiking and paddling gear.

Bethany Nielson, a spokeswoman for the company, said 54 employees have been hired.

Nielson said REI will offer classes and events to help get people interested in the outdoors, and it will have activities designed for those with more experience.
