Fewer Virginians will be traveling on vacation this Fourth of July holiday, AAA Mid-Atlantic said today.

The travel group expects the number of Virginia holiday travelers will be down 1.8 percent from 2008, spokeswoman Windy A. VanCuren said.

AAA said the decline in leisure travel mainly will be due uncertainty about the economy and the recent rise in gasoline prices, up 16 cents from last month.

Virginia State Police will heighten traffic enforcement during the Fourth of July weekend, with 75 percent of the force's uniformed troopers out on the state's highways, starting Friday morning, State Police Capt. Steve Chumley said.

Urging motorists to drive safely, Chumley pointed out at a roadside press conference this morning that safe driving means buckling up, obeying speed limits, avoiding distractions, driving alcoholand drugfree, and sharing the road with other vehicles.

Traffic fatalities also are down this year in the state.

As of today, 345 persons have died in crashes on Virginia roadways this year, compared with 412 at this time last year, according to the state police.

Times sure must be tough if the sheep are thinking twice about hopping into their SUVs to get a new OBX bumper sticker.

I remember the disappointment as a child the only time I ever go on vacation.
My father was heartbroken when he told us.
It was during the rough Jimmy Carter years.
I voweled never to disappoint my kids like that.
Little did I know I would ever see a day with a reckless Democrat Congress and a naive and destructive president teaming up to destroy our economy.
We, like many Americans, have to sit on the sideline this summer and hold on to what we have.
We all know it is only going to get tougher once the Senate passes cap and trade taxes and restrictions like the House just did.

Went to Va beach middle of June.Plenty of rooms but NO discounts. Looks like they want to make all the money off the ones who are foolish enough to go there. I recommend staying home and saving your money. I believe more of the recession is yet to come.

Bush and Cheney keep manipulating gas prices so their buddies can continue to reap huge profits. Now we can’t go on vacation. When will they be voted out of office???
