Looking for employment in the Richmond area?

"A job search can be a challenging and emotional time for folks, regardless of the circumstances," said David Nelms, a senior vice president at First Market Bank.

The Richmond-based bank is hosting a Network and Outreach Workshop, TechNOW, in collaboration with the Greater Richmond Technology Council, Interbake Foods and Mondial Assistance.

The workshop is Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sheraton Richmond West, 6624 W. Broad St.

The event is open to the public. It is aimed at information technology professionals and others looking for work in the Richmond area. Registration is not required.

"Our hope is that this event, along with others that are being organized around the community, will help individuals locate opportunities and employment within the Richmond community or surrounding areas as quickly as possible," Nelms said.

As opposed to a job fair, which puts people in touch with companies that have specific job openings, TechNOW is designed to jump-start the process of networking, he said.

Chip Farmer, executive director of the technology council, said the workshop will be informal and informative.

"Some of the folks who have been laid off have not been in the job search mode," Farmer said. "We will give tips and tricks about the best way for networking, résumé writing and interviewing." -- Carol Hazard
