CRAIG BUTTERWORTH Metro Business asked Craig Butterworth, spokesman for the National White Collar Crime Center, the Henrico County-based organization that provides cybercrime training to law-enforcement agencies, what consumers can do to protect themselves from Internet fraud. "Some of the things that consumers can do to protect themselves from online fraud include updating their firewalls and security software. That can go a very long way in helping keep the bad guys out of their machines.

"You have to keep in mind nowadays as technology continues to evolve, the bad guys have become increasingly more sophisticated with respect to their ways of penetrating a computer's defenses.

"We also strongly recommend that consumers always delete unsolicited e-mails without opening them.

"If you are in a social networking site, always make it a point never to click on any e-mails from someone you don't know and even people you believe to know, as it may have an embedded link attached that could be malware or spyware."

Nice job with the report, Butterworth, but you’d have sounded better if I’d been editing the tape…
