BLUE CRUMP Metro Business asked Blue Crump, owner of Cityspace, a Richmond-based business that builds energy-saving houses and installs solar-power systems, about the future of renewable energy in Virginia:

"Until recently, Virginia has not been a state where we have seen significant growth in the use of renewable energy.

"With relatively low utility rates and the absence of any state incentives, there haven't been a lot of good financial reasons for us to move toward renewables.

"However, now with utility rates on the rise and we just recently received federal-funded stimulus incentives and Gov. [Timothy M.] Kaine's recently announced state rebate program, all of these things are going to spur the use of renewable energy, specifically solar photovoltaic, solar thermal and wind here in the commonwealth.

"I think the landscape that we'll see over the next year will be increasing more and more use of onsite renewable energy."

That’s great and I wish Blue’s business the best.

I have to question Dominion Power’s commitment to renewable energy though, as long as they neglect to put solar on the roof of their Richmond riverfront energy trading floor (the architect designed the southern sloping roof for them).
