They love us, the really love us.

The state's long-running tourism slogan, "Virginia is for Lovers," has been elected by popular online vote to the Madison Avenue Advertising Walk of Fame in New York City.

"This goes to show that love does conquer all," said Alisa Bailey, president and CEO of the Virginia Tourism Corp.

Virginia Tourism and Gov. Timothy M. Kaine will celebrate the award at 12:30 p.m. today on the south steps of the state Capitol.

"This is a huge honor," Bailey said, "and we want to thank everyone who voted to put Virginia over the top."

Tourism officials are inviting people to wear their favorite "Virginia is for Lovers" hats, T-shirts, buttons and collectibles to the event.

Launched in 1969, "Virginia is for Lovers" is America's longest-running state tourism slogan.

The state's tourism tagline competed against 25 others slogans representing consumer brands, destinations and public-service initiatives, including the New York State Department of Economic Development's "I Love New York" and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority's "What Happens Here, Stays Here."

The online election to the Advertising Walk of Fame kicked off Advertising Week, a weeklong gathering of marketing professionals in New York.

American consumers also voted to add AOL's running man icon and the Budweiser Clydesdales to the Advertising Walk of Fame.

Thank you JC4702. That completes the half piece of information from the story. VA Tourism is honorable. RTD is another matter.  The first thing taught in Journalism 101 is the five W’s -“who, what, when, where, and why.“  It seems the RTD has forgotten the first W.

Thank you JC4702, but the newspaper article is where credit should have been given. Who would think to go to VA Tourism to find out this info. They were very neglectful. Artists should always get credit in any publication that speaks about the art.

On their site they do give credit. See http://www.virginia.org/site/features.asp?featureid=140

Thank you, Dragonkiss.  That was the main piece of information I wanted from this story. Now I have half of another - either the VA tourism council is vain and petty, or the RTD is negligent in Journalism 101.  Honoring a work of art without honoring the artist is unjust.

What the tourism council has shamelessly failed to do is to recognize the man who is responsible for the “Virginia is for Lovers” slogan.  Mr. David N. Martin formerly CEO of The Martin Agency. Why can’t they give credit where credit is due!!!! Shame on you VA Tourism Council.
