The expression, “like having an uncle in the business” might be over-used, but in the case of Don Stevens of Stevens Jewelers, it couldn’t be more apt. A soft-spoken gentleman with the warm, trustworthy demeanor of a Walter Cronkite, Don has built a thriving business by taking exceptional care of his customers.
“Stevens is a boutique operation. What does that mean? Top quality merchandise and service along with extremely competitive pricing,” explained Don. “I am a firm believer that you can offer fine jewelry at outstanding prices. And unlike the big chains, we don’t have costly brand names and overhead to support, so we pass along even more savings.”
Looking around the trays and trays of sparkling jewelry in the elegant showroom at the new, easily accessible location on West Broad Street and Cox Road, it was easy to see why shopping there could be so much fun. “Stevens has everything from young things in silver to the classic favorites, exquisite estate pieces, and very fine investment pieces,” said Don while taking out an assortment of dreamy diamond engagement rings.
“Fine jewelry, especially diamonds, is a Stevens’ specialty. We carry a wide variety of pieces, plus we have the ability to custom make designs. Our talented goldsmith Wilhelm Kalich, who worked with Tiffany’s for many years, brings your concepts and designs to life, just as you imagined. And having something custom-made does not inherently increase cost,” pointed out Don.
Value is always uppermost on the jeweler’s mind—taking the time to explain as much as customers wish to learn about their purchases is a Stevens’ hallmark.
“We try to make it fun,” laughed Don, “and most customers do enjoy learning more about their jewelry choices.”
Engagement ring shoppers especially appreciate the shop’s large, dazzling selection and the experienced jeweler’s guidance. “If you’re having something custom-made, we help you understand the process. Or if you’re choosing from our large inventory, we’re happy to share our knowledge with you. After all, these are large purchases, meant to be enjoyed for a lifetime.”
