Sheep-shearing demonstration set at Ash Lawn-Highland
Ash Lawn-Highland, home of President James Monroe, will welcome visitors from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 19 for its annual sheep shearing.
Professional shearer Sy Caryl will demonstrate and discuss shearing, which is designed to maximize efficiency and minimize discomfort for the sheep and the shearer.
Ash Lawn-Highland's craft interpreter and artist-in-residence Russell Hubert will demonstrate Monroe-era crafts. He will present the historic art of paper quilling, a unique form of decoration.
Ash Lawn-Highland is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. April-October, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. November-March.
Tours cost $10 for adults ($9 for seniors and AAA members) and $5 for children (ages 6 to 11) and residents of Albemarle, Augusta, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Nelson, Orange and Rockingham counties.
Ash Lawn-Highland is in Charlottesville, off Interstate 64, exit 121, at 1000 James Monroe Parkway.
