James River Singers to perform
The James River Singers will present a concert exploring musical examples of the sacred, the secular and in-between Saturday at 7 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 4602 Cary Street Road, and Sunday at 4 p.m. at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 520 N. Boulevard.
"Jesu, Meine Freude," one of J.S. Bach's six motets, dominates the first half of the concert and is the foundation for the rest of the program.
"All music touches us in a way that transcends the mundane," said guest conductor Christopher Lindbloom. "The Bach is specifically sacred and sets the spiritual standard by which the rest of the pieces are measured."
Also included are compositions by Frederick Delius, Francis Poulenc, Henry Purcell, C.V. Stanford and Randall Thompson.
Lindbloom is conducting the group this season while artistic director Jeffrey Riehl is on sabbatical.
Tickets for the concerts are $15 for general admission and $10 for seniors and students, and will be available at the door.
