Dorian Wilson takes the podium tomorrow night for the first of three Richmond Symphony Masterworks concerts featuring the music of Charles Ives, Benjamin Britten and Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
Wilson, 45, is the sixth conductor candidate to audition this season. He is permanent guest conductor of the St. Petersburg (Russia) Symphony.
From 1998 to 2003, Wilson was music director of Theater Vorpommern in Germany, venues that offer orchestra, choirs, ensembles, ballet and other musical arts. He conducted more than 300 performances of orchestral works, ballet and opera.
As recognized by the International Federation of Music Competitions, Wilson has won more international prizes for conducting than any other conductor. These include Dimitri Mitropoulos (Athens), Kiril Kondrashin (Amsterdam), Tokyo International, Antonio Pedrotti and Arturo Toscanini (Italy) and Nicolai Malko (Copenhagen).
Wilson’s studies are in piano, viola, composition, art history and conducting from Oberlin Conservatory, Indiana University, the University of Michigan and the Hochschule fur Music in Vienna.
He conducted the Richmond Symphony in two concerts in February, but this will be his first go with the full orchestra.
