1708 Gallery in the city's downtown Gallery District recently opened a show of new works by Richmond artist John Henry Blatter.

Blatter, who teaches at Virginia Commonwealth University, uses sound, video and environment to create his installations, which are customized to the space in which he is working.

The artist describes his 1708 Gallery installation as focusing on the "fleeting instances of tenor in which noises gently fade into silence . . . and time ceases to exist."

Blatter will conduct a free lecture at the gallery Nov. 21 from noon to 1 p.m., discussing sound art with VCU associate professor of kinetic imaging Stephen Vitiello.

The exhibition runs through Nov. 28 at 319 W. Broad St. Hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m.
