Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Richmond & Tri-Cities recently announced that Hopewell Mayor Brenda Pelham is one of 17 nominees vying for the inaugural "America's Big Citizen of Year" for 2009. "America's Big Citizen of the Year" nominees were selected by the public via http://www.BigBrothersBigSisters.org, in the form of a 50-to-100 word description of how a person's deeds and actions have made a positive impact on the lives of vulnerable children.

A privately led book drive is under way through Friday to supplement those available to the Head Start and Virginia Preschool Initiative students at Westview Elementary School in Petersburg. Collection boxes have been placed at the school, as well as other places in the city. They include Walnut Hill Pharmacy, Walnut Hill Cleaners, the Petersburg Public Library, Heavenly Hands restaurant, Tabernacle of Praise Fellowship, Good Shepherd Baptist Church, other Petersburg businesses, and at N.B. Clements Jr. High School in Prince George County.
