Calico beans
Put beans, hamburger, bacon, onion, ketchup, brown sugar, dry mustard and vinegar into a slow cooker. Cook for about 4 hours on medium, stirring occasionally. —Rusty Spencer, Henrico County
Someone -- Rusty Spencer doesn't recall who -- gave him the recipe for Calico Beans about 15 years ago.
He'd like to thank the person.
"It is a sweet chili that tastes great and has always been a hit at neighborhood and family get-togethers," said Spencer, who lives in Henrico County.
He made a batch for the Super Bowl.
It's literally full of beans -- pinto, lima, green and baked -- combined with ground beef, crumbled bacon and onion, and seasoned with ketchup, brown sugar, dry mustard and vinegar.
"I often substitute ground turkey for ground beef," he said, "but it tastes great either way."
Spencer, regional director for Forethought Life Insurance Co., is married with a daughter and does "about half of the cooking at our house."
"I like to cook most anything from gingerbread pancakes and omelets to pork tenderloin, and turkey with sweet potato casserole," he said.
