Composition: 50 percent Merlot, 30 percent Cabernet Franc, 20 percent Petit Verdot
Description: This Bordeaux blend richly deserved being named the top wine in the state fair's competition. The best barrels of each of the varietals were blended and aged an extra year in oak, which resulted in a complex wine highlighted by dark cherry flavors, soft tannins and a velvety finish. 13 percent alcohol

Fast fact: In 2004, Barren Ridge owners John and Shelby Higgs decided to return to an old Shenandoah Valley farm -- and its apple orchards -- that John's grandfather had purchased in 1934. They revitalized the land, renovated an old barn into a winery and in 2007, planted grapes. While waiting for their vines to mature, the Higgs purchased grapes from nearby vineyards and received help from winemaker Michael Shaps and began producing standout wines. Those first grapes are being harvested now and will be bottled in the spring.
