Fast fact: Merlot is one of the classic Bordeaux grapes and is grown throughout the world. In 2008, it was the third most-grown grape in Virginia (behind Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc). Rodney Strong grows its Merlot grapes in the Alexander Valley and Russian River Valley in the Sonoma area of California. Merlot took an unfair rap in the 2004 movie "Sideways" that sent sales of Pinot Noir soaring and Merlot plummeting. Sales figures, however, show Merlot has rebounded to previous levels.
Pairing note: Merlot is a great wine for food and generally goes with many dishes. Rodney Strong recommends pairing this Merlot with poultry, game birds, duck, goose, hearty pastas, lamb, beef and barbecue, as well as mild and strong cheeses. It's nice for just sipping, too.
