Five reds to try

Resonata Nero D'Avola 2006 ($6.49): A perfect pizza-pasta red wine made from the Nero D'Avola grape, which is indigenous to Sicily. Smelling of blackberries, this wine has a medium body and is fruit-driven with raspberry/blackberry fruit and has a slightly spicy finish. Great with red sauce, salami, lamb.
-- Brad Hemp, Bella Vino,
Stony Point Fashion Park
Maipe Bonarda ($7.99): Bonarda is the second most planted grape in Argentina behind Malbec. The wine has an intense purple color with aromatic notes of smoke, violets and wild berries. It has a rich and round mouthfeel and smooth, velvety tannins. Great with heartier dishes: grilled meats, stews.
-- Ian Kirkland,
The Caboose, Ashland
Tres Ojos 2006 Old Vine Garna cha ($7.99): With black pepper and leather aromas, this red packs plum, raspberry and blackberry flavors backed up by good acidity and rich, mellow tannins. A great match for sausages, cheeses and roasted meats. One hundred percent Old Vine Garnacha grapes from Spain make this an extraordinarily good quality wine.
-- Carol Nestor, Vineyard's
Corner, Chesterfield
Corte Alla Flora "Guiggiolo" 2007 Toscana IGT ($11.99): This Sangiovese-based Tuscan red is medium-bodied and food-friendly. Dry with hearty violet and cherry notes, it's a natural for pairing with aged Italian cheeses, such as Piave or Fiore Sardo, as well as weeknight fare.
-- Julia Battaglini,
River City Cellars, Carytown
Maipe Malbec 2008 ($10.99): This red from the Mendoza region of Argentina is one of the best values on the market. Showing complexity and loads of dark fruit, this wine has good intensity and drinks great. Try with fresh grilled sausage or a plate of nachos!

Lovers, John Rolfe Parkway
