Wine of the Week: First Colony Viognier 2008
Published: October 14, 2009
Winery: First Colony Winery, Charlottesville (http://www.firstcolonywinery.com)
Composition: 100 percent Viognier
Description: Wine month in Virginia continues, and this Viognier is another good example of a quality state wine. This well-balanced white has floral aromas that lead to a smooth, banana-like taste with a hint of pineapple. It was aged half in stainless steel and half in neutral oak to give a soft mouthfeel and finish. Neutral aging means the barrels are usually older, which cuts down on any overpowering oak taste. 13.6 percent alcohol
Cost: $17-$18.99
Where to buy: selected Kroger stores
Fast fact: First Colony, about 10 miles south of Charlottesville, is owned by Randy McElroy Jr. of Goochland. He established the winery in 2000, and the first wines were released in 2002. Viognier, fast becoming a highlight grape for Virginia, was the sixth most-grown grape in the state in 2008 (behind Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Vidal Blanc).
