Fast fact: Adieu has won 25 medals in 2009, the most recent a best in show and best dessert wine in the August 2009 Mid-Atlantic Southeastern Wine Competition that featured 482 wines. Gray Ghost had five first-place and three third-place awards. This follows a best of class in the 70th annual Los Angeles Wine and Spirits Competition that had judged 3,400 wines from around the world. This was the fourth straight year Adieu won the honor. "Late harvest" means grapes are left on the vine longer than normal to build the sugar content. Winemaker Al Kellert and wife Cheryl own Gray Ghost, which is about 11 miles west of Warrenton. Gray Ghost is the name given to Confederate Col. John Singleton Mosby by Union troops during the Civil War. Mosby roamed the Amissville area and was known for his ability to infiltrate Union lines.
